Allen, Stephen - Lane Robertson - horse stealing
Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Saturday, 22 August 1874
Stephen Allen and Lane Robertson, two men living a short distance south of town, were arrested last Thursday on a requisition from the Governor of Illinois, and started to Springfield in charge of an officer yesterday morning, to answer to a charge of horse stealing.
About one month ago they took two horses belonging to Charles Allen, the father of one of the parties, and hitching them to a buggy belonging to young Allen, drove to Sangamon County, Illinois. There they traded the horses for two others, and afterwards proceeded westward to Missouri and Kansas. Not prospering there they returned to this county, and some time after their arrival told Mr. Chas. Allen what disposition had been made of his horses. That gentleman at once proceeded to Illinois to get the horses. On his arrival there he found one of them had died. The other he got by a replevy and returned home with it. The man of whom the horse was replevied followed with an officer and requisition as above stated, reaching Crawfordsville on Thursday, soon after Mr. Allen’s return. The men were identified before Judge Thomas on Thursday night and taken west on the 6 o’clock train yesterday morning.
