Dowell, Luther - blows off fingers

Pvt, Luther Dowell was resting comfortably at Culver Hospital Monday after losing three fingers from his left hand early Sunday afternoon in a shotgun accident at 809 Voris St. Pvt. Dowell was taking a shotgun from the wall at the home of his brother, James Dowell when the gun was accidentally discharged. No one was home at the time of the accident. Dowell was rushed to Culver Hospital by his father-in-law, Arthur Zachary. The thumb, forefinger and middle finger of his left hand were lost. The effects of shock were so great that he was unable to tell what he planned to do with the gun. Dowell arrived home on leave from his post at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.  His wife is the former Barbara Zachary. She resides at 1109 Tuttle Ave. Dowell went into the Army on April 6, 1953.
