Powell Cemetery

Powell Cemetery lies just off the Elliott Road about 1/2 mile from its junction with Mill Creek Pike and country road 550W. Its map position in Noble township is southwest quarter Section 30, Township 26N and Range 6E. GPS approximate location in Latitute 40 degrees 46.258 minutes and Long 85 degrees 57.438 minutes.

The 1875 Pictorial Historical Atlas of Wabash County shows the property being owned by the heirs of J.W. Powell. The property is currently owned by David and Shirley Ellis. The cemetery was found and documented in 2005 by Rebecca Burton. Ron Woodward also visisted the site with Rebecca at a later time. At least six burials are known in this small cemetery overlooking the Prairie, southwest of Richvalley. Two stones have been found and 3 field stones with footstones as well. One grave was indicated by a sunken area. People in the area have commented that stones were taken out of the cemetery for a variety of reasons.

The two identififable stones are:


GEORGE W. POWELL  died May 30, 1849 age 32 yrs 9 months and 16 days. (Geo. Alber Wabash, In, stonecarver)

BENJAMIN L. POWELL  son of William and Mary Powell died Jan 1,5, 1848 age 20 yrs 1 month & 10 days. (Geo. Alber)
