Volney Powers Hutchinson was orphaned at age twelve and bound out as an apprentice carpenter according to a biography of his son, George Hutchinson. However, there is a statement in History of Vermillion County, Clinton, page 234 stating: "Minor business men were, J. W. and Fielding Shepard, and Volney Hutchison, Mechanics, who afterward moved into the country and became successful farmers". Vermillion County, Indiana was laid out in 1824.
The Terre Haute Express, Tuesday, March 18, 1873, page 4:The largest funeral that has taken place in Fayette township for many years, was that of Volney P. Hutchinson on last Friday. He was an old citizen and highly respected by a large circle of acquaintances.The HISTORY OF VIGO AND PARKE COUNTIES, H.W. Beckwith-1880, Fayette Twp.-p. 452, states:"MARY ARMSTRONG, New Goshen, was born in Virginia, February 26, 1836, and is the daughter of William and Katie (FELLERS) ARMSTRONG, natives of Virginia, who emigrated to the Indian reserve in 1837, then to Tippecanoe county, and then to Terre Haute, Vigo county, Indiana. There Mr. ARMSTRONG followed the carpenter's trade.
The subject of this sketch was educated in Vigo county, and received a common education. She was married to John DENAHIE, January 20, 1857. By this union she had three children: William M., Mary E., who died October 7, 1860, and John A. Her second marriage was to Volinie P. HUTCHINSON, November 25, 1862. From the second union she had five children: Clara B., Sarah A., Frank, George L. and Volinie. Her first husband died October 7, 1860, and Mr. HUTCHINSON March 12, 1872. She was left in good circumstances, with a farm of 315 acres, well improved."
Vigo County Indiana Marriage Supplement states that Volney and Mary Jane Denehie were married November 16, 1862. Family history states that in 1857 Mary Jane Armstrong married John Denehie. They had two Children, Mary Elizabeth born in 1858 and John Austin born in 1859. In 1860 Mary's daughter died followed by her husband in 1861. Widowed at age 25, she was left to raise her infant son and 7 year old William Armstrong, her half brother.
