DEATHS FROM CHOLERA, 1849

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, INDIANA

On July 24, 1849, to quiet rumors about a new epidemic of cholera in Tippecanoe County,
The Wabash Atlas newspaper, Lafayette, Indiana, printed the following article with a list of burials during the month of July.

Submitted by Adina Watkins Dyer

Aggregate Interments-Progress of Cholera at Lafayette, &c.

"
We are under obligation of Mr. Meek, one of the sextons of the burying grounds of this city, for the following list of persons who have died of cholera and other disease since the 3d of this month,
about the time this dreaded disease first made its appearance amongst us.  It will found interesting to friends at a distance, serve as a suitable reference for the future, and contradict the erroneous reports abroad in the land, in relation to the fatality of the disease amongst us.  It has been reported that we are burying on a average from twelve to fifteen per day, which will be perceived, by official statements which follow, to be quite incorrect. Some days, the interments, from all diseases, may have reached the number reported, but no two days together will furnish grounds for any such an average, and certainly the sexton's report is to be strictly relied upon, for in no instance, we may reasonably suppose, has any one died, but what has been buried in some of our burying grounds, and a list kept, from which we get the following copy.  In some instances the names may be spelled wrong as they were rather badly written by the friends and relatives of the deceased, at the time of interment, but in most cases may be understood."

"The success with which our physicians have treated the cholera for the last week or two, speaks well; as in almost every instance where they have
had timely notice, the disease has been checked, and the patient entirely restored to health.  At least three-fifths of the cases attacked, have found relief,
when a physician was immediately called."
