NIMROD JONES, 76, EX-FIREMAN, DIES

Nimrod (Nip) Jones, 76, for 34 years a member of the Lafayette fire department, died at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the home of a nephew, Russell Easterbrook, R. 5, By-Pass and Highway 38.

Mr. Jones who began his service with the Lafayette fire department in 1902, retired as captain of Fire Company 3 on June 1, 1936. Born in Lafayette, he was married to Grace Mohr, who died in April, 1943.

A popular figure with the public and firemen alike, he had long been regarded as unofficial historian of the fire department, drawing on his large store of memories of the early days. A story based in part on some of his recollections, together with his picture, appears in the magazine section of this issue.

He was a member of Congress Street Methodist church. He also belonged to the Odd Fellows and Redman lodges, and was a secretary of the Fireman’s Pension fund for many years.

Surviving are nieces and nephews.

note: Nimrod Jones was the son of William Lyman Jones and Leah Frances Waite.
