NIMROD JONES, 76,
EX-FIREMAN, DIES
Nimrod (Nip) Jones, 76,
for 34 years a member of the Lafayette
fire department, died at 11:30 a.m.
Saturday in the home of a nephew, Russell
Easterbrook, R. 5, By-Pass and Highway 38.
Mr. Jones who began his service with the
Lafayette fire department in 1902, retired
as captain of Fire Company 3 on June 1,
1936. Born in Lafayette, he was married to
Grace Mohr, who died in April, 1943.
A popular figure with the public and
firemen alike, he had long been regarded
as unofficial historian of the fire
department, drawing on his large store of
memories of the early days. A story based
in part on some of his recollections,
together with his picture, appears in the
magazine section of this issue.
He was a member of Congress Street
Methodist church. He also belonged to the
Odd Fellows and Redman lodges, and was a
secretary of the Fireman’s Pension fund
for many years.
Surviving are nieces and nephews.
