Generation No. 1

1. SAMUEL2 STARRETT (STARRETT1) was born July 01, 1777 in Ireland, and died June 15, 1852 in Battle Ground, Tippecanoe Co. Indiana. He married (1) ANNE REBEKAH PORTER September 06, 1807 in Jefferson County, Ohio. She died Bet. 1818 - 1820. He married (2) MARY RUSSELL September 13, 1825 in Wayne County, Indiana. She was born 1797, and died 1855 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

Notes for SAMUEL STARRETT:

Samuel Starrett was born in Ireland and came to America with his brother Robert around 1800.

He married in Jefferson County, Ohio to his first wife Anne Rebeckah Porter. Two sons, Joseph and Alexander were born in Ohio. From here they traveled on west to Wayne County, Indiana where four more children were born. Anne Rebeckah died sometime between 1818 and 1820.

Samuel remarried on September 10, 1825 to Mary Russell in Wayne County. No children were born to this union.

Owning land here he sold the last of it in 1828 moving on to Tippecanoe County and settling at Pretty Prairie.

I have found no other record of Anne Rebeckah, just their marriage.

Samuel and his second wife are buried in Pretty Prairie Cemetery.

2. ALEXANDER3 STARRETT (SAMUEL2, STARRETT1) was born Abt. 1811 in Adams County, Ohio, and died January 10, 1842 in Laporte County, Indiana. He married THARISSA MCLAIN October 25, 1836 in Indiana. She was born Abt. 1821, and died Abt. 1848.

Notes for ALEXANDER STARRETT:

Alexander was said to have been a wrestler who was killed in a match.

All I have been able to find relating to his death is, cemetery records from Union Mills Twnp. in Laporte County Indiana, and some leagal records, because he died intestate. Also guardianship papers of his son Joseph C., letters of adminstration and the Items sold after his death.

He is buried in Union Mills Township Cemetery in LaPorte County along with his brother Joseph and Sarah the wife of Joseph.

Notes for THARISSA MCLAIN:

Tharissa remarried after Alexander's death 1842.

Her second marriage was on May 4, 1843, to Graham Kennedy, to this union was born one son, James Kennedy, who was living in Watseka, Illinois in March of 1923.

Tharissa died around 1848 at which time at which time her son Joseph C. went to live with family in Tippecanoe County.

3. JOSEPH C.4 STERRETT (ALEXANDER3 STARRETT, SAMUEL2, STARRETT1) was born March 20, 1841 in Laporte County, Indiana, and died October 15, 1923 in Battle Ground, Tippecanoe Co. Indiana. He married ORLENA BEEKER April 15, 1866 in Laffayette, Tippecanoe Co. Indiana, daughter of LEONARD BEEKER and ANNA STINGLEY. She was born May 08, 1848 in Battle Ground, Tippecanoe Co. Indiana, and died October 26, 1935 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

Notes for JOSEPH C. STERRETT:

Joseph was born in LaPorte County Indiana, and orphaned at an early age. He then went to live with his grandfather Samuel Starrett. After Samuel's death in 1852, an uncle William was made his legal guardian.

On August 22, 1862, Joseph enlisted in the union army. He was a member of the 99th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Company F. On April 21, 1865 he was promoted from private to corporal. On June 5, 1865 he was mustered out at Washington, D.C.

His card on file at the Archives Division, Indiana Commision On Public Records states that Joseph was 21 when he enlisted at White County, Indiana by Capt. Gwin. He was mustered October 7, 1862 in Indianapolis by Lt. Neuman. It gives his physical description as 5 feet, 7 inches tall. Dark hair and eyes with a fair complexion.

IN THE NAME OF THE BENEVOLENT FATHER AMEN.

I, Joseph C. Sterrett of Tippecanoe County, in the State of Indiana, being of full age to devise and bequeath my property and being of sound and disposing mind and memory, and not under the co-ercion or restraint of any person whomsoever, do hereby make, publish and declare this to be my last will and testament, herebt revoking all wills by me at any time heretofore made.

First. To my beloved wife Orlena Sterrett, who has been to me a loyal and loving wife, and has helped me to accumulate all the property of which I may die seized, I give devise and bequeath unto her my said wife,
all of my estate, real, personal and mixed, together with all my rights and choses in action, to be hers absolutely, without restriction with full power to manage, sell or dispose of the same in any manner she may see fit.

Second. I hereby nominate and appoint my said wife, Orlena Sterrett, Executrix of this my last will and
testament.

OBITUARY of JOSEPH C. STERRETT:

J.C. STERRETT CALLED TO REST
Life Long Resident of Pretty Prairie, and Civil War Veteran Passes Away.

J. C. Sterrett, a life long resident of Pretty Prairie passed away at his home Monday morning. A complication of disease was the cause of death. Mr. Sterrett was born March 20, 1841 in LaPorte County, Indiana, but when a young child moved with his parents to this vicinity and has lived here since that time. He was a veteran of the Civil War, serving in Company F, 99th Regiment , Indiana Volunteers.

April 15, 1866 he was married to Orlena Beeker who survives him. Eight children were born to this union, six of whom survive. They are Clinton Sterrett and Docia Gay of Delphi, Cora Garrott of Brookston, Sumner Sterrett of Monticello, Charley of this city, and Macey Collier if Battle Ground.

One half brother, James Kennedy of Watseka, Illinois survives.

Mr. Sterrett was a member of the masonic order and of the Methodist Church.

The funeral is to be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Pretty Prairie Church and burial will be in the Pretty Prairie Cemetery. The funeral services will be in charge of the Masonic lodge.

Friends are requested to omit flowers.


NOTE: Joseph did not come to Pretty Prairie with his parents. He came alone after both parents died. He was raised by his grandfather Samuel Starrett and when Samuel died his uncle William became his guardian.

Orlena Sterrett, 87, Is Called by Death

Delphi: October 26 (special)
Mrs. Orlena Sterrett, 87, died at 6:30 o'clock this morning at the family home, four miles northeast of Battle Ground. She was a member of the M. E. church. Surviving are three sons and three daughters. Clinton, at home, Carl of near Lafayette, Sumner and Mrs Macie Collier of Battle Ground. Mrs. Docia Gay of Delphi and Mrs. Cora Garrott of Brookston. The funeral will be held at the home on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in Pretty Prairie Cemetery.

Indiana. He met CLARA ELIZABETH MCKINLEY February 15, 1894 in Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co. Indiana, daughter of LEWIS MCKINLEY and SUSAN LANE. She was born August 03, 1877 in Americus, Tippecanoe Co. Indiana, and died June 25, 1956 in Battle Ground, Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

Notes for CHESTER J. STERRETT:

Chester was a farmer. His hobby was collecting antique machinery, which he took to fairs and shows.

In the summer he would have an old time threshing bee on the farm using the machinery. A big dinner was at noon served for all who attended. The meal was usually ham and beans, cornbread, with pie for dessert and iced tea to drink.

At the time of his death in 1987, he owned about 35 tractors. That year they were all displayed at the Battle Ground Steam Show, which he helped organize.
