N.B.- The class-standing of some students being very irregular, it is
difficult to make a satisfactory classification. Those familiar with Battle Ground in former times will see that this Catalog shows a larger attendance from abroad than has ever before attended in the same time, giving satisfactory evidence of popularity abroad as well as at home. This year is a large increase over last, in number and standing, and far ahead of any year before or since the war.

GENERAL REMARKS

LOCATION

The "Battle Ground Collegiate Institute" is situated about seven miles north of the city of LaFayette, in the county of Tippecanoe, Indiana, where Harrison fought his battle with the Indians in 1811. The beauty of the location is not excelled by any in the State. The Louisville, New Albany & Chicago Railroad passes through the place, making it easy of access from all parts of the country.

The surrounding country is rolling, fertile and beautiful, which combined with the historical associations of the locality, endears the place to every student and every patriot.

BUILDINGS

The building accommodations are ample, and most of them being new, there is much to be gained to the students from the advantages in modern improvements.  Improvements are constantly being made.

IMPROVEMENTS

We call attention to the public improvements at the Battle Ground, being made by the State, among which are the Iron Fence, and the Statues of some of the venerable heroes of the Battle in 1811.

Students selecting a place to attend school cannot afford to overlook these works of art, so well calculated to cultivate the taste, and develop a love for the sublime and the beautiful, connected with the course of study in the institution. These are the highly honored and classic grounds of Indiana.

COURSE OF STUDY

While we make no pretensions to present a University course of study, we off a course which we believe eminently adapted to the wants of young gentlemen and young ladies desiring a good education. Hence, some of the abtruse mathematics, which should belong alone to the University, are omitted, and in their place are substituted other branches of science and literature, much better adapted to the general student.

The Latin and Greek languages are taught to a sufficient extent to prepare young men and women for the higher classes in college.

The greatest care will be taken to grade the student according to his literary standing.

DEGREES

Students completing the Scientific Collegiate Course of Study will be entitled to graduation-the gentlemen receiving the degree of Bachelor of Science; the ladies the degree of Mistress of English Literature.

EXPENSES

The tuition is graded according to the advancement of the student; on account of our extensive patronage our rates are low.

In the Primary Department           $4.00
Intermediate Department              5.00
Grammar School Department            6.00
Scientific Collegiate Department     8.00
Preparatory Collegiate Department    8.50
Instrumental Music, Drawing, Painting, etc., usual rates.
Much attention will be given to training in Vocal Music if desired.

Those studying the French language will pay an extra charge of $5.00 per term.
Tuition bills must be settled at the opening of each term. This regulation is imperative. No student will be received for less than half a term,
and deduction will be made on account of absence.
In case of serious illness a deduction will be made from the tuition corresponding with the time lost by the student.

BOARDING

Can be procured at the boarding houses or in private families, at reasonable rates, at from $3 to 3.50 per week. Every one will be amply accommodated, as arrangements have been made to furnish all who come with boarding or rooms.

Students can procure rooms and board themselves, thos materially decreasing the expense of boarding. Many of our best students, male and female, are adopting this course.

TERMS AND EXAMINATION

The Collegiate year is divided into three terms. At the close of each term there will be a rigid examination of all the classes, and in no case will a student be permitted to pass into a higher grade until examined upon previous studies. The examinations are public, and the friends and patrons of education are invited to attend.

BOOKS

Books are furnished students at their won expense. For their convenience a supply of text books and stationery will be kept in the village and sold at the usual retail prices.

GOVERNMENT

The discipline of the school will be strictly parental. The object will be to secure proper subord nation by appealing to the noblest faculties of the mind, and the best affections of the heart. A careful supervision will be exercised over the social manners and habits as well as the moral and religious feelings of the student. Reading the Scriptures, attending some place of worship on Sabbath morning. An exact record of each student's merit and demerit, both on recitation and conduct, will be kept for future reference.

LITERARY SOCIETIES

There are two literary societies-the Ciceronean and Atheneum-connected with the Institution. These societies meet weekly for literary exercises, which consist of  Discussions, Orations, Declamations, Compositions, etc., and also give an occasional public entertainment. They both have small but well selected and rapidly accumulating libraries.

NORMAL DEPARTMENT

There is in connection with the Institute a Normal Class, in which special attention is given to preparing students for successful teaching.
General questions on the eight branches taught in the Public Common Schools, and the system of teaching, constitute the labors belonging to this department.  No extra charge to become a member of this class.

APPARATUS, CHARTS, ETC.

We have apparatus for illustrating the principals of Natural Philosophy, Chemistry and Anatomy, and in a short time hope to have complete apparatus in all departments of the sciences. We are also well supplied with Maps, Charts, etc., and have the nucleus of a Mineralogical and Geological Cabinet, contributions to which will be thankfully received. Such contribution, consisting of fossils, or fossiliferous rocks, shells, or rare mineral, ores, etc, should be directed to Professor RICE, and will be labeled with the locality from whence they came, also the name of the donor.

NOTICE

If the teachers are not present when students arrive at the depot, Mr. JOHNSON, the Railroad agent and operator-a very pleasant gentleman-will kindly direct them to the Principal's residence.

LECTURES

A lecture will be delivered each alternate Sabbath, on some scientific or moral topic.

REQUIREMENTS

-Tuition in advance.
-Strict observance of study hours (hours explained at the opening).
-Promptness in the performance of all duties.
-Attendance at church as often as practicable.
-Strict obedience to temporary prudential rules.

PROHIBITIONS

-The use of tobacco about the buildings.
-Visiting or amusement during study hours.
-Clamorous noise, profane or quarrelsome language.
-Absence from any required exercise.
-Absence from town without leave.
-The use of gunpowder in any form on the premises.
-Marking, cutting, or in any way abusing building or furniture.
-All palpably immoral, indecorous and uncourteous conduct.

TO PARENTS

We ask your co-operation in our efforts to educate your children.

1. If possible, let them enter at the commencement of the term. Then the classes are formed, and it is necessary for the student, in order to be
successful, to start regularly with his class.

2. Do not call them away during the term, if it can be avoided. This disarranges the classes and is a source of irregularity to the pupil.

3. Do not allow your children to leave school before the examination. Serious inconvenience to all concerned often arises from a neglect of this caution.

4. Supply them very sparingly with spending money. This is sometimes a
preventive of much evil.

HEALTH

Good health, with the student, is an important consideration. Good water is one of the essentials to good health. Battle Ground is proverbial for good water in general, and chalybeate water a specialty. For facts in regard to the analysis, we give extracts from the Lafayette Courier.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

CHALYBEATE SPRING AT BATTLE GROUND-A DELIGHTFUL SUMMER RESORT

The existence of a chalybeate spring at Battle Ground has been known to our citizens for years. The water is strongly impregnated with iron, and its tonic properties, as well as its curative qualities, have been demonstrated.  For general prostration it is most excellent and effective. It is equal to the best chalybeate waters of Avon, Saratoga and other famous resorts.

The State has just expended twenty thousand dollars in the erection of an iron fence inclosing the battle-field. It is a beautiful park of native forest trees. In addition to the historic interest which attaches to the blood-stained field, the famous Prophetstown is near at hand.  It was here that the dusky Prophet and his twin brother, TECUMSEH, made their home or headquarters during the three years immediately preceding the Battle of Tippecanoe. The very spot where Tecumseh's wigwam stood is pointed out.

George WINTER, the artist, visited the spot as early as 1840. The locality is well marked. The Prophet's Rock is also pointed out, but this is a traditional fiction. The elevated ground upon which the Prophet stood during the engagement on the morning of the battle, and where he offered up his incantation to propitiate the favor of the Great Spirit, was pointed out by General HARRISON to John SHAW and other early settlers. It is just east of the Battle Ground, within rifle range, for his voice was heard above the din of battle, encouraging the dusky warriors in the desparate for perate hand-to-hand conflict. The locality is full of historic interest, and its elevated position, pure air, and the romantic beauty of its glens and groves, commend it as a summer resort for families. It is accessible by two good roads from Lafayette-the Riverside Gravel Road, on the west bank of the Wabash, and the old road by Davis' Ferry-romantic and beautiful drives. Then we have the railroad, with its two or three trains each way daily. The Wabash for fishing, bathing and sailing; Burnett's Creek for the little folks and their wading-and last, but not least, the health-restoring waters of the Chalybeate Spring, ought to make this place famous. Avon is doing a large business as a summer resort on half the capital.

_________________________________________________________________

Dr. WETHERILL, in his scientific report upon the Lafayette artesian waters, makes mention of the chalybeate water at Battle Ground as follows:

"I have seen many highly-prized chalybeate waters which do not present as strong indications of iron as this one. It is light and agreeable to the stomach, and coats the stones over which it flows with a strong ochreous deposit. I desire to direct particular attention to thse iron springs, as there is an opportunity, through the, not only of realizing a handsome fortune, but of greatly benefitting the advantages of Lafayette as a watering-place. Many invalids who visit a sulphur spring ignorantly, find to their sorrow that they have undertaken the risk and expense of the journey for a water that is not suited to their case. It is well for them if, as at the White Sulphur of Virginia, they can find a chalybeate spring which is adapted to their disease. Many such will viist the artesian water, and will, in like manner, need to use the Battle Ground spring. It would be difficult to find a place better adapted for a hotel for summer resrot than at the Tippecanoe Battle Ground. A place of much interest; yearly visited by many; with beautiful surrounding scenery; fine opportunity for baths, both with the mineral water and the water of Burnett'' Creek; accessibility from Lafayette, etc., are advantages which greatly lessen the risk of the undertaking. It would supply a want much needed here, viz: a pleasant place where parents could afford a few weeks' change of scene and air, in the summer time, to their children, at a small outlay. A Battle Ground train would enable Lafayette to be reached every morning in time for business, and left in the evening, at the close of the day's labor."
