Notes
for MARY ELLA TOWER:
History
of Jefferson County, Iowa--
"Miss
Ella M. Tower, who was born in Ripley County, Indiana, on the 24th of
February, 1852, and came
to Jefferson County, Iowa, November 1, 1854, with her parents, J.H. and
Philena (Burton) Tower."
Memorial
program for funeral says she was born in Vincennes, Indiana. However,
Vincennes is in Knox
County, Indiana, and contradicts the Jefferson County History which
says she was born in Ripley
County, Indiana, and bears out the reported birthplace in other records
of Delaware which is
in Ripley County, Indiana.
The
Weston Behner funeral home in Fairfield, Iowa, was the site of the
funeral and Dr. M.A. Gable
of the Methodist Church of Fairfield, Iowa, conducted the services. The
internment at Mt. Moriah
Cemetery was also conducted by the Weston Behner funeral home.

Capt.
Samuel and Mary Pease
Samuel
PEASE - b. about 1655; d. Oct. 12, 1689, RI. His parents are unproved,
but some writers say
that he was the son of John PEASE and Mary BROWNING. Capt. Samuel died
of wounds "in
the Arme, in the side and in the thigh" received Oct. 4, 1689 while
"off of Wood's Hole" capturing
"a Pirate at Tarpolin Cove" in Vineyard Sound (quotes from affidavit at
Boston Court of Assistants,
Jan. 14, 1689). Married about 1680.
Mary -
Perhaps further information on her PEASE children may be found in the
various records of Cambridge,
MA, or the Middlesex Probate records. Married second Thomas WHITTEMORE
(b. Sep.
1, 1677, Charlestown, MA; d. about 1717), son of John WHITTEMORE and
Mary UPHAM. All
of the children of Mary and Thomas were together on May 29, 1709 at
Cambridge, MA. Mary, granted
administration of the Thomas WHITTEMORE estate on Sep. 23, 1717, was
living May 9, 1727,
when she petitioned for support in caring for her grandson Thomas
WHITTEMORE, only heir
of her second husband. Children of Mary and Thomas: Thomas, Jr. (b.
1694) married Dorothy
THOMAS (parents of Thomas III); Francis (b. 1696); Samuel (b. 1698);
Mary (b. 1700); Daniel
(b. 1701/2); Hannah; Ephraim; and Sarah. Dr. Henry Bond adds daughter
Martha (b. 1709).
Children
of Samuel and Mary Pease
Martha
- bap. Dec. 10, 1683, Old South Church, Boston, MA. Either twin to
Mary, or born about 1682.
She may have been the Martha PEASE "of Cambridge" who married on Nov.
21, 1700 at Watertown,
MA Uriah CLARKE (d. 1722), as his second (or perhaps third) wife.
Uriah's will was dated
May 7, 1721. Uriah and his first wife Mary had 10 children. Children of
Martha and Uriah: Susanna
died young; and Pease married (posthumous son Uriah).
Mary -
bap. Dec. 31, 1683, Old South Church, Boston, MA. Probably born earlier
in 1683, based on
sister Sarah's baptism.
Sarah
- bap. Aug. 12, 1684, Old South Church, Boston, MA.
Susannah/Hannah
- bap. Feb. 21, 1687, Old South Church, Boston, MA. Her name is
reported as
Susannah on the baptism record, but she may have been the Hannah PEASE
"of Cambridge" who
married William BROWN. The original baptism record needs to be read.

Charles Rail -- "In 1995, Family Bible in possession of Ellis Clark
Rail, son of Inez Josephine Clark Rail, reports that she was married at
the
Clark home 'Collett Farm' in Jefferson County, Iowa. The marriage
certificate
from the state said they were married in Birmingham, Van Buren County,
Iowa. I would think the
family bible is more accurate, and that Birmingham was where the
circuit minister reported the
information. The minister, Laurence R. Howard ofWisconsin." Marriage
