1. GIDEON7 TOWER (JOHN6, BENJAMIN5, JOHN4, JOHN3, ROBERT A.2, (?)1) was born April 30, 1753 in Cumberland, Providence County, RI, and died Abt. 1847 in Dillsborough, Dearborn County, IN. He married ABIGAIL PERKINS March 1775. She was born November 28, 1754 in Hingham, Plymouth County, MA, and died Abt. 1845 in Dillsborough, Dearborn County, IN. Notes for GIDEON TOWER: Served in the Revolutionary War. In affidavit made to secure a pension under the Act of 1832 he gives an account of his service: In 1775 as a private in a company of Connecticut Militia, commanded by Captain Cleft, of Parson's regiment; in 1776 as a private in a company of Rhode Island troops, commanded by Captain Wilcox, of Dyer's regiment; in 1778, as a substitute for Mr. Barber, in a company commanded by the same captain in the same regiment; in 1779 as a private in a company of Vermont Militia commanded by Captain Noble, in Herrick's regiment; in 1780 as an orderly-sergeant in a company of Vermont Militia commanded by Captain Hutchins, of Herrick's regiment. After the battle of Bunker Hill, the regiment he belonged to was called to Roxbury, MA, where it was stationed during the seige of Boston. He was living in Windham County, CT, at the time of his enlistment in 1775. He moved from there to Cumberland, RI, and then to Vermont during the war where he was again called into service. Afterwards he moved to New York, living there 16 years. He then moved to Kentucky for two years and subsequently to Indiana where he purchased land in Dearborn County and lived for 16 years. Granted a pension April 26, 1833, that commenced March 4, 1831 and was paid until March 1847. A grandson, John Tower Lemon, wrote of him in the Lawrenceburg Register in March 1843: "He joined the army in of the revolution in April 1775, and served from three to seven months every year while the war lasted. His wife was born the 28th of November 1754, and they are both now living in Caesar Creek Township, in this [Dearborn] county, and enjoying good health for persons of their age. They had thirteen children, fifty-nine grandchildren, seventy-nine great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. They had two sons out in the last war--John Tower and Gideon Tower. The former was massacred on the 23rd of January 1813, at the River Raisin. They had one grandson, Henry Millard, who had the honor of commanding the right wing of the Texan forces on the memorable 21st of April 1836, when the Mexicans were defeated and Santa Anna was made prisoner by the Texans. It is seldom that a husband and wife live together sixty-eight years and live to see their descendants multiply to one hundred and fifty-seven, and six of the fifth generation; and what is yet stranger, that these generations should all be of one political opinion. All of these, so far as my knowledge extends, who were voters in 1840, voted for General Harrison." Was a Private in a company of Connecticut Militia, commanded by Capt. Cleft, of Parson's regiment, which he joined in April, 1775; in 1776 he was a private in a company of Rhode Island troops, commanded by Capt. Wilcox, of Dyer's regiment; in 1778; he was a substitute for Mr. Barber, in a company commanded by the same captain in the same regiment; in 1779 he was a private in a company of Vermont Militia commanded by Capt. Noble, in Herrick's regiment; in 1780 he was an orderly-sergeant in a company of Vermont Militia commanded by Capt. Hutchins, of Herrick's regiment. After the battle of Bunker Hill the regiment to which he belonged was called to Roxbury , MA, where it was stationed during the siege of Boston.
