Mrs Rous was born Oct. 5th, 1773 in Great Horton, near Bradford, England, near which place she spent her early days, and whas there married to her late husband, Mr. James Rous, who died in Vevay in March 1839. In the year 1812 with their family they emigrated to the Undited States and settled in the State of New York. In the year 1814 they came to Vevay, IN., in which place and its vicinity she has since lived. Thus is severed another link binding the present generation those that are past. She was always a Christian. Very early in life she became connected with the Pioneer Methodist Society in England and frequently heard the celebrates John Wesley and Joseph Benson preach. She lived to see her children and children's children grow up around her to the fifth generation. She was an affectionate mother, ever kind to those around her and a remarkable example of patience, for during and affliction of over twenty years during which time she was not able to walk, she was never heard to murmur or complain. She died tranquil, composed and easy - her end was peace. The above copied from a News Article. From the files of Estene Cole Leap. Capt. Percy Rous was born in Vevay, July 23, 1816, and died at his home, in Vevay, Sunday morning, August 1891. at 7 o'clock, aged 75 years 1 month. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Rous, who came from England to America about 1811, and located in Vevay in 1814. He died in 1839 and his wife died in 1863. Percy Rous was born in a house (long since removed) where the residence of Mrs. Justi Thiebaud is now, South corner of Pike and Vine yard streets. He was one eight children, Mrs. Linda Shaw, of Vevay, and Mrs. Cora Glenn, of Pleasnt, now being the only survivors. He learned to be a carpenter, and for several years followed this business. Among his work was the building of upper Indian Creek wooden bridge, several years ago supplanted by the present iron bridge. In 1838 he and Miss Mary Cole were united in Marriage. Six children were born to them-Frank M., Sarah E., wife of Benj. N. Davis; Amie R., all of whom reside near Mt. Sterling; Mary J., wife of Nathan J. Walden, Ashland, Kansas; Miss Hannah C., who resides at home, and John, who died during the war. Mrs. Rous survives her husband. Mr. Rous left the occupation of carpenter and purchased a farm following that business until 1847, when he was elected sheriff of the county, and so well did he perform his duties that he was re-elected-serving two terms. He again removed to his farm. When the war commenced he at once declared himself in favor of perserving the Union and sustaining the Government. He enlisted and Sept. 12, 1861, was mustered into the service for three years or during the war, and was Commissioned Captain of Co.E. 50th Ind. He was mustered out of the service, with an honerable discharge Jan. 5, 1865, serving three years, three months and three days. He participated in every battle in which his company was engaged and was a brave soldier and competent and efficient officer. Capt. Rous has not been in good health since his discharge from the army. Entering the service a magnificient specimen of physical manhood-weighing over 200 pounds, full six feet high, with mind corresponding to his good physical organization-he returned in very poor health, which continued to decline. Several years ago he removed with his family to Vevay. For about five years he has been confined to his home by paralysis and other physical disearses. He sacrificed fully as much to defend the flag he loved so well as if he had been stricken down on the battlefield, for he returned only to be an invalid. Truly his sacrifices for his country were great. Capt. Rous was in every respect a good citizen and in all the relations of life was strictly honerable. The funeral took place last Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, under auspices of Maj. Patton Post G.A.R., of which he was a member. Rev. Vayhinger (the son of a soldier) read a passage of Scripture. Rev. H.C. Pelsor (who was a soldier and is a comrade of G.A.R.) of Sugar Branch, made remarks appropriate to the occasion. Friends sung sweet songs of Christian consolation. Loving hands had placed on the casket beautiful floral designs, and his comrades of the G.A.R. had spread on the casket the flag he had so bravely defended, and pinned on his coat the badge of the G.A.R. he had so honorably worn in life.A large number of friends from all parts of the Country attended the funeral. The remains were interred in Vevay Cemetery. In the 1870 Census of Jefferson Twp., Switzerland County, IN, John Moody is listed as a male of 12 years living in the Rous household. Percy died at the age if 75 years 1month and 23 days. More About PERCY ROUS: Burial: I.O.O.F Cemetery, Vevay. He married AMELIA FRANCES STEWART 03 Nov 1863, daughter of JOHN STEWART and MARYETTE MUNN. She was born 01 Oct 1844 in Craig Township, Switzerland Co. Indiana, and died 04 Nov 1924 in Vevay, Switzerland Co. Indiana. Notes for FRANCIS MARION ROUS: Obituary as published in Vevay Newspaper Obituary
Francis M. Rous Francis M. Rous, the eldest son of Captain and Mrs. Mary P. Roous, was born in Vevay on Sept. 23, 1839 and died April 29, 1922. He lacked but a few days of rounding out 83 years of life. He boyhood was spent in this city and all his life within the confines of the county. He bacame a Mason in 1862, joining the lodge at Bennington and remained a member until his death, being one of the county's oldest Masons in point of years of service. In early manhood he joined the Methodist Church and loyally kept the faith thence-forward On November 3, 1862 he married Amelia F. Stewart and she with two children, Louis P. Rous, of Vevay and Mrs. India V. Hizer of Aurora survive him. Another daughter Nannie E. died some years ago. In the presence of death words are futile things if they are used only to extol the virtues of the departed or give expression of a grief which is at once natural and universal. But if we draw a lesson for the living from the records of the dead then, and then only, do we find justification for what may be uttered here. What makes up the sum total of true manhood? Is it place or power? Pomp or show? Nay, none of these. Faith, Kindliness, Forbearance, Industry, Incorruptible honesty. Devotion to vamily and friends. A willingness to share uncomplainingly all the vicissitudes of life--from the cradle to the grave--these are the things that make a man. And measured by all these tests Francis M. Rous was a man. He lived close to nature and there he learned, as it is nowhere else to be learned, fixedness of purpose, serenity of soul, and a superb and supreme confidence in the beauty and righteousness of life altogether. He did not rail at fate, nor question that his place in life was what he chose to make it. When he came to man's estate he gladly accepted a man's duties and a man's responsibilities, completely performed a man's work and was content with its rewards. How much more can be said of any human being. True, some mens lives are cast in places where responsibility to their fellow men give varying degrees of opportunity for public service, but within the boson of his family one man may be as truly a nobleman and gentleman as another. Cast in a mold of true gentility, trained to respect the right and opinions of others, our friend was none the less tenacious of his own. He believed and lived by the docrine of the square deal. It is doubtful if he had an enemy in all the world and when we can say this with truth of a man who has lived in the full light of day for more than four score years within a circumscribed locality, what greater tribute can we pay him? Here a man's weaknesses and a man's faults, if he has any will find him out. Not only do they find him out but it is a lamentable trait of humanity to magnify and multiply them. The record of human frailities is almost always unfair to the subject. Therefore, it is worthy of remark that it is sometimes possible, as is the case here, for a man to live fully and leave naught of bitterness behind. And when the end shall come--as it must come to each and all--no greater boon can be vouchsafed to any man that that he shall lie down and die in the bosom of his family, that his eyes shall vision for their last conscious sight the old familiar scenes, the spots which in infancy, manhood and old age, he has known and loved. When a man goes to "Join the innumerable caravan" there is no port from which he can more safely sail than from under his own roof, sheltered by the branches of his own trees and with farwells nodded to him by his own flowers. Death under these circumstances is sublime. Beyond sublimity we may not go. More About FRANCIS MARION ROUS: Burial: 01 May 1922, Vevay Cemetery, Vevay,Switzerland County IN. Notes for ULYSSES GRANT GRAY: Ebenezer Methodist Church (Pleasant Twp., Switzerland Co.) The former Ebenezer Methodist Church grew out of camp meetings on Indian Creek, according to a centennial history of the church. These are reported as beginning in 1802 (when population would have been very light). However, because these early meetings include members of other denominations, it is not recognized as a Methodist church. The Ebenezer Society was organized in 1816 and was named in honor of Ebenezer Gray for his services as an exhorter and his part in organizing the society. James Alfrey and wife Nancy deeded one and a half acres to the trustees, Samuel Bellamy, Ebenezer Gray, Edward Kern, John Protsman and James Adams, on Feb. 19, 1831 (Switzerland Co. Deed Book E p. 391.) The first preacher assigned to the church after its completion was Allen Wiley. The Switzerland Co. History (p. 1161) lists the first members as Jacob Kern and family, James Alfrey and wife, Joseph Gray and wife, Thomas Evans, wife and family, Ebenezer Gray and wife and John Protsman and wife. Other early members recorded in the church history include Evans, C. Brown, Joseph Gray and son Ebenezer, Uly G. Gray, Will Shaw, Alfrey, Jacob Kern, son Edward Kern and John Protsman. The first church building was completed in 1831. The second building, a frame structure, was completed in 1842 while the third church building was erected in 1901, according to the church history. On Aug. 23, 1847, Stillwell and Frances Graham sold land in Moorefield to James Armstrong, William Protsman and Jesse Todd, trustees for parsonage (Switzerland Co. Deed Book M. pp. 234-235) and the first parsonage was built that year. The church appointed the same three trustees to receive the deed for the lot on 16 Nov. 1847. (Switzerland Co. Deed Book M p. 248) A second parsonage was purchased in 1918, burned in 1920 and was rebuilt in 1921. The church building has been used as a private dwelling for several years.
