WWI_SLAVENS, George - Putnam

George SLAVENS, 72, a veteran of the Spanish-American War and of WWI, who saw action in the St. Mehell offensive during WWI died Friday morning Feb 16th at the Veteran's Hospital at Marion from the effects of a cerebral hemmorage. He had been ill of a heart ailment. Mr. Slavens began his military service at the turn of the century when the field artillery where he served for 16 years. For 12 years he served with the coast artillery at Ft. Monroe VA. He was overseas for 17 months during WWI. At the end of his army service he was a rural mail carrier out of the Waveland Post Office for 14 years. He was a member of the Waveland Christian Church, Morton Masonic Lodge, Raymond Todd Post, American Legion, United Spanish War Veterans post of Greencastle and Order of Eastern Star, Waveland. Born Dec 15, near Greencastle, in 1879, the son of Mr. and Mrs. WT Slavens, he married Stella May McCLAIN at Phoebus, Va Dec 22, 1915. There survive the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Gilbert Thomas of Indianapolis; a sister, Mrs. Thomas Tuttle, Greencastle, a grandson, Harold Thomas of Indianapolis; and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Waveland Methodist Church Sunday afternoon in charge of the pastor, Rev. EF Prevo, and burial was in Mt. Moriah Cemetery where the Raymond Todd Post American Legion conducted graveside rites.   --- transcribed by kbz
