WILLIAM McGAUGHEY (McGAHEY and also found McGahay)
The name McGaughey is one of the most prolific in Putnam County, many stemming from this great Revolutionary War soldier.
William McGaughey was born about 1760-61 (as he was 18 years old when he enlisted in October 1778 serving one year in Carlisle, Cumberland County Tuscarora Valley, PA under Capt. Pratt's 4th Company, Col. William Butler's 7th PA regiment, commanded by the great Anthony Wayne. Tallied as 5'5" tall, he was a wheelwright. His pension Claim S 36696 said he was discharged in the fall of 1781. He began receiving his pension June 17, 1818 at age 53 and living in Bath County, Kentucky. In 1820 he was still living there. Warrant # 1004 December 6, 1821, assumedly in Bath County. But, this was sold Sept 14, 1825 at Owingsville, KY and they headed to Blakesburg, Indiana where he passed away Sept 4, 1829. He is buried in the Skillman Graveyard near Russellville with a DAR marker from the Washburn Chapter.
He was married to Prepare Clark in 1788 and they had at least these children: Frances m. Zadoc Conner; John C.; Andrew; William; James (died age 2); Margaret (died age 1); Martha; Samuel; James and Michael.
