SEWELL, Sanford - Putnam

CAPTAIN SANFORD SEWELL died yesterday at Greencastle, Ind., from the effect of a stroke of apoplexy. He is 65 and a member of the Eleventh Indiana regiment.

The death of Capt. Sanford Sewell occurred Tuesday morning. About 5 o'clock Monday afternoon Mr. Sewell was engaged in his usual work at Hamilton's grocery, being employed there on Saturdays and Monday of each week. He had made up a small order of goods and was on his way from the counter to the rear door to place the goods in the wagon for delivery.  Messrs. Hamilton and Foxworthy, the other men in the store, noticed that Mr. Sewell sand down in a chair near the stove, placing the basket in his lap. They questioned him from the front of the store as to what was the matter but got no response.  Upon going to hi, Mr. Sewell tried to speak but could not, but indicated that his heard hurt him.  Mr. Hamilton rubbed his head and at once sent for Dr. Lammers. Upon his arrival the physician saw that Mr. Sewell was in a bad shape and ordered

immediate removal home. Later Dr. Bence was called, he being the family's physician who remained until Mr. Sewell's death which occurred at 3:15 o'clock.  He pronounced the cause of death apoplexy. Mr. Sewell was 65 years of age and was one of the city's best known men. He was industrious and upright and a christian gentleman.  He was a member of Co H, 11th Indiana Cavalry, under Col. Robert R. Stewart.  He enlisted at Lebanon Jan 9, 18864 as lieutenant and was promoted to Captain on June 21, 1864 and served until Sept 18, 1865 when discharged. He leaves a family. The funeral occurred Thursday at 2 p.m. services at Brick Chapel. It was under the ritual of the GAR, the deceased having been a member of the Greencastle post, but retiring some time ago.   --- kbz
