April 11, 1919

Lieut. Slavens of Camp Pontanzen, France who was first a citizen of Putnam Co. and then of Montgomery Co, has made a trip to find out exactly the manner of Carl W. Scribner's death in France and his previous health, as erroneous rumors were afloat and made the following statement under oath: "Carl W. Scribner was admitted to base hospital No. 65 Oct 21, of influenza; transferred to hospital 33 Nov 19, died Jan 29, 1919 from gunshot wound accidently self inflicted. He was cleaning his rifle, for when men are sent to hospitals they take all their equipment with them. I read the findings of the Board that investigated his death and their findings were 'That he came to his death through an accidentally self-inflicted gunshot wound in the line of duty. ' If it had not been an accident he would not have been in the line of duty. Hosp No 65 is about 7 mi. from here. Hospital 33 is here at Camp Ontznezen, and while here he was in a ward for pneumonia patients but was getting practically well. " Memorial services will be held April 27 at 2 o'clock at the Russellville Christian Church in honor of the deceased soldier.
