“The 1840 census has been very important to many researchers.  Only on the 1840 census I the question: “pensioners for revolution or military services.”  Those who were listed in the Putnam County census for 1840  and what household they were in are: Isaac Armstrong, 81, Crawford Tuggle household; Elizabeth Cunningham, 69, Benjamin Cunningham household, widow of Nathaniel Cunning). Samuel Denny, 85, Isaac Storm household; Laban Hall, 87, Abel D. Hall household; Andrew McPheters, 79; Benjamin Mahornay, 79, Owen Mehornay household; John A. Miller, 80. Thomas Rhoten, 85; William Shepherd, 80, Felix Shepherd household. Isaiah Slavens, 75; Nimrod H. Stone, 75, Thomas C. Duckworth household; Peter Stoner, Sr, 77 and Robert Whitehead, 79.  Pensioners were the soldiers or their widows. In a few cases the children were granted pensions.

Isaac Armstrong; Nathaniel Cunningham; Samuel Denny; Benjamin Mehornay; Thomas Rhoten; Isaiah Slavens; Peter Stoner, Sr; William Shepherd and Robert Whitehead are buried in Putnam County and are all proven Revolutionary War veterans.  Many other Revolutionary War soldiers are buried in Putnam County but were not on the 1840 census.  Some of these also were at Yorktown in 1781.  Of these 13 pensioners that are listed only two, that I have found records stating the fact were at Yorktown at the time of the great battle and surrender of Cornwallis on oct 19, 1781 – Nathaniel Cunningham and William Shepherd…
