lawrence clark mccray- notice - Putnam

In Memory - Of Lawrence Clark McCray, son of Flem and Rebecca McCray, deceased was born September 28, 1875 died June 1, 1899. Three years ago he joined the Regular Army and was stationed at Ft. Crook, Nebraska. When the war began he went to Cuba and fought in several hard battles. Last November he was at home on a sick furlough and stayed about two months then returned to Nebraska, and was ordered to the Phillippine Island, where he met his death. On June the 1st, in company with two or three other boys were crossing the swamps when it came a heavy rain and drowned them. He was a Corporal of Co G 22 Inft. His time would have been out the 26th of this month then he would have been home with his friends and relatives. He leaves to mourn his loss father, two sisters and one brother besides a host of friends and relatives. 'Tis so hard to think of our dear brother lying so far away from us not knowing how he was buried, but while his body is away off yonder his spirit is at rest in heaven.

Away in yonder lonely grave, our soldier brother lies among the dead. For him we can but drop our tears, his days are past his life is o'er. We hope to meet on Canaan's shore. So day after day we will think of him in those bright reals so fair as mingling with the blood washed that need no clearning there.
