Washington DC Nov 15 ’65 – Ed. Banner Dear Sir, Being a soldier and formerly 27th Ind but now of the regular army allow me through your valuable paper to state a few circumstances in connection with my life as soldier. I left my home in Greencastle, Putnam County and volunteered my services in Co I of the 27th in the beginning of August 1861 to serve my country’s cause three years, “unless sooner shot.” I volunteered again in the regular service immediately after the battle of Antietiam, in 1862. I have been in my present regiment since, having again reenlisted in the corps of US Engineers for three years more, in February 1864. I have seen hundreds of my comrades fall in the many hard-contested battles in which we have been engaged but am thankful to an overruling Providence that I am still left in the land of the living. All the Putnam boys in this Corps are at present enjoying good health. My term of service will expire on the 8th day of February 1867 and although at that time will have served over six years still should my country at the time again need my services I will tender them as freely as I did in 1861. Having a great many relatives and friends in Indiana and especially in Putnam County and knowing your paper to be widely circulated there, I beg in this manner let them know of my whereabouts and welfare, trusting you will not think me intruding when I ask you to give these few hurried lines a place in your next publication. Respectfully, Charles W. Kendall, Company C, US Engineers
