Greencastle, Ind – Services for Jerome Canady Hixson, 87, Sarasota, Fla a longtime English professor at DePauw University will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church, Greencastle. Jackson and Lew Funeral Home, Sarasota is handling arrangements. He died Sunday. Mr. Hixson was a professor of semantics and English at DePauw from 1924 until 1987 and held the James Whitcomb Riley Chair in literature. He also served as dean of chapels. A graduate of Allegheny College, Meadville, PA he did graduate study work at Harvard University. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1923. Mr. Hixson published Word Ways, a widely used textbook on semantics as well as articles and a book on Alfred Lord Tennyson. Active in the United Methodist Church, he had been a conference lay leader for many years and was a delegate to the general conference. He also worked on the commission for the church’s hymnal in 1935. He served on the board of Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis for 24 years. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Sarasota or DePauw University. Survivors: wife, Margaret Humbert Hixson; brother, Robert J. Hixon; three stepdaughters. – kbz
