Gold Star Moms - Doughboy Memorial

Source: Greencastle Herald 21 Nov 1927 p 1
The American Doughboy, Putnam County’s Memorial to the 22 boys who gave their lives in the World War was unveiled with simple but impressive ceremonies Sunday afternoon.  “The Spirit of the American Doughboy,” located on a high boulder base overlooking the southeast corner of the Court House square will stand as a constant reminder of those Putnam County Boys who made the supreme sacrifice.

Paul V. McNutt of Bloomington, commander of the Indiana Department of the American Legion in the principal address of the afternoon, stated that it was easy to forget those boys who marched away to war nine years ago and that a constant reminder of their sacrifice was needed.  The monument would stand, he said, “not as a monument to war but as a monument to patriotism.”….  Exercises held in the Greencastle gymnasium Sunday afternoon were largely attended by citizens of the county.  In honor sections of the big gymnasium patriotic organizations and their auxiliaries were seated. Besides the dozens or so veterans of the Civil War, one veteran of the Mexican War of 1845 was present in the person of Uriah Gasaway of Reelsville, 101 years old.  Mr. Gasaway was presented to the large audience by Judge James P. Hughes and the crowd as a mark of respect and admiration to the aged soldier, arose to their feet.

Gold Star mothers were seated in a section directly in front of the speaker’s stand.  Music by Greencastle band, Donus Denny, commander of the Collins-Hurst post of the American Legion at Cloverdale, gave the invocation.  …
