DENNEY, William

William Denney

NOTE: I am the Patriot Graves Chairman for the Clarence Cook Chapter of the SAR. A couple of years ago is stumbled across (yes, I mean that literally) the grave of William Denney while returning to my car while visiting the grave of Joel Garrison. This was in the Stilesville Cemetery in HENDRICKS COUNTY. I am now convinced that this is the same William Denney that is supposed to be buried in Putnam Co.

Given shield government headsone, it would not surprise me if the grave had been moved in the 1800’s. If I ever get time, I would like to go though the records of the cemetery and see what they have on the situation.

Born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, William Denny is like the brother of Revolutionary War soldier, Samuel Denny. Having been born in the same county (Samuel 1755 and William in 1748) and fought under the same men, it is highly likely but not proven. If not brother, surely 1st cousins or other close relation.

Served in the Frederick County Virginia militia under Capt. Peter Babb and Col. John Smith as a 2nd Lt. 1777 - 1st Lt. under Capt. Aaron Mercer - assisted in guarding prisoners taken at the surrender of Cornwallis.

Died April 8, 1832 and is according to source below, "buried in a private cemetery east of Greencastle."

Married Mary Shields and had at least the following children: Martha (1795); John (1797) ; Nancy (1800); Isabel (1802); Mary (1804 - married James Denny) and Eliza (b 1808 m. Hiram Gaither)
