Alleging that frequently during the past two or three years her husband, Alvan O. Rice has assaulted her by striking, kicking and beating her. Mrs. Ora E. Rice of Clinton township today filed suit for divorce in the Putnam Circuit court here. In addition to the divorce decree, Mrs. Rice asks custody of Bettie Jane, 2 year old daughter of the pair. $500 alimony and $10 per week support money. Mrs. Rice also charges that her husband has failed to provide properly for her and their daughter for the past several months. She alleges that he is an able bodiesd man and received $60 a month as a pension from the Government. She charges that he uses much of this money to buy intoxicating liquor and that he frequently gambles. Ann 11 year old son of Mrs. Rice by a former marriage was forced to leave the Rice home despite a prenuptial agreement concerning his care and treatment Mrs. Rice charges. According to the complaint the pair were married in October 1926 and were separated in June of this year. Judge James P. Hughes today issued an order against Rice restraining him from interfering with the personal property owned by Mrs. Rice. Rice is also forbidden from interfering in any way with Mrs. Rice or their child. June 22 was named by the court as the day for a hearing on Mrs. Rice’s request for support money pending settlement of the case. --- transcribed by kbz
