In the autumn of 1889 with a capital of $75 Mr. Barnes entered business in Ladoga, buying a small stock of groceries in that place; of a Crawfordsville wholesale grocery firm, he purchased on credit, $140 worth of goods which were added to the first purchase of $75. Then came the time for hustling for trade. That he was successful is proved by the fact that when the first bill became due it was promptly paid. Sometime in '93 Mr. Barnes disposed of his business in Ladoga and moved to Roachdale, where he soon built up a large trade. However, when a satisfactory price was offered him he sold the business in Roachdale in 1896. In '97 he started a grocery store at Jamestown, where he remained a few months, then sold out and went into the same business in Indianapolis here he remained until in 1899 when he landed once more in Roachdale, still in the grocery business, where he remained until the present year. Last May he established the Cash Grocery here, and it is needless to say the venture has proved satisfactory to the firm. --kbz
