ELLIDGE, R.J. - Interntl Cement

Source: Greencastle Herald (Putnam County, Indiana) 20 June 1919 p 1

SAY! By Charles J. Arnold -- RJ Ellidge -  I have only known him a few weeks but during that short time I have learned a lot about him that I want you folks to know.  He sure is a good Indian.  Mr. Ellidge is the new superintendent down at the International Cement Co, Indiana Inc Mill at Limedale.  He came to Greencastle from New Orleans and just like all other folks who have ever lived in Greencastle, he sure likes this old town. And this old town likes Mr. Ellidge.  For it was he who suggested and promoted that big Barbecue party at the plant, Wednesday. There is no need to say much about Mr. Ellidge other than he sure is a “good Indian.” You know what I mean.  Of course he knows his cement from stone to dust and when it comes to barbecuing beef – well, if you ate some of it you know and if you did not, you lose!  I am not going to say much about the BBQ except everything was even better and bigger than I had predicted it would be.  The crowd was large – at least 12,000 folks there; the eats were better; the arrangement was perfection itself; the heat was even more intense than I had anticipated; the crowd jollier; the Coco Cola was colder; the music sweeter; the coffee hotter and the enjoyment was even greater than I anticipated.  And I had anticipated much, I was there early; stayed late; ate much; laughed a lot; talked incessantly; perspired freely; swore seldom and enjoyed much.  And just to make the day complete and take advantage of every facility offered, I cut my hand while opening a bottle of Coco (sic) Colas and then took advantage of the first aid service. Boy that me and how …

Another article noted there were 16,416 bottles of Coca Cola drank and that there was half what was mentioned above registered; however probably another 10-12,000 came to the “Lone Star Day Barbecue.”  18 states + Honolulu were represented.
