GREENCASTLE.
The county seat of Putnam county, and one of the pleasantest cities in the
State. It is situated near the crossing of the Louisville, New Albany & Chicago
and Terre Haute & Indianapolis railroads, thirty-nine miles from Indianapolis
and fifty from Lafayette. It is the seat of Indiana Asbury University, one of
the most popular and flourishing educational institutions of Indiana. The city
is rapidly growing, and large manufacturing establishments are springing up. The
Greencastle Iron and Nail Co have extensive works here, capable of turning out
three hundred kegs of nails daily, consuming about thirty tons of coal, and
employing one hundred hands. Greencastle has now a population of about 4,000, is
well supplied with churches and common schools, and the various trades,
professions, etc.
