LANDIS, Charles B.

Although not a birthright Indianian (thus not MoCo either) Charles Beary Landis made an impact here.  Born in Milville, Ohio the son of
He passed on April 24th in 1922, at just 63 in Ashville, NC having gone there the week before (from his home in Chicago) because of his health. (photo and information from Wikipedia and his obituary in The Wilmington Daily Commercial – Delaware) News Journal Monday April 24, 1922 p 1).  An editor for four years of the Logansport Journal (then the Delphi paper) after graduating from Wabash College (AB Degree) in 1883. From 1894-1896 he served as the President of the Indiana Republican Editorial Association.   He married Cora Chaffin in Indiana. – Buried Mount Hope Cemetery, in Logansport. Landis served as an Indiana Congressman from March 1897 – March 1909 but was not a successful candidate for reelection.  One of the most impressive of all his accomplishments was his work with the DuPont Company especially during WWI (as he was head of the military sales department) when he and others were quite active in supplying explosives for the winning of the war, having been stationed in Washington in a specialized DuPont office.  Almost everyone in the DuPont Company knew Landis as he loved to gather information from them all.  He was also the official speaker at practically “every convention of the department held in his time and he never failed to keep the attention of everyone while the proceedings were in his charge!”  Great story teller.  “During his residence in Wilmington he gained a host of friends in all walks of life.  His genial personality affability and broad knowledge made him welcome at all public functions, especially anything patriotic!”  Now, Landis was not born here or die here but he was in our midst for at least his four years at Wabash so not sure about you but I’d count him as ours!  - kbz
