A remarkable woman is Mrs. Mary McMains. She is the mother of 13 children, the youngest being 39 years old, all of whom are living. She has also 40 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren. And out of this number all, save seven are living. Yesterday Mrs. McMains was 83 years old and the event was celebrated by a family reunion and dinner at the home of her daughter Mrs. Evaline Pratt at Waveland. The children are, in order of seniority, John and James of Waveland; Samuel of Morton; Phillip of Rossville, Ill; Nancy Kelsen (Kelso) of Waveland; Marinda Ellis, Rossville, Ill; Anderson, Armstrong, Ill; Elmina Petty, Mammoth Springs, Ark; David, East Lynn, Ill; Evaline Pratt, Waveland; Lloyd, Waveland; Mary Ellen Alfrey, Alamo; Robert, Waveland. All were there except David. There were present at dinner 52 persons. Mrs. McMains is rather feeble and unable to attend church. In consequence arrangements were made for Elder Budger to conduct divine services at the house in the afternoon when the sacrament of the Lord's Supper was administered. -- transcribed by kbz

A reunion of the McMains family was held at the grove on E. F. Wilhite’s farm, three and a half miles south of Crawfordsville, Aug. 28, 1897. There relatives, cousins, uncles and aunts met, a number of whom saw each other for the first time. Music and games of various kinds furnished amusement for the day, but the best of all came when baskets and boxes of various sizes and descriptions filled with the good things necessary to satisfy the wants of the inner man, were brought and their contents spread on a long table prepared for the occasion. Everyone ate until he was satisfied, and more than twelve baskets full were taken away.
Of the family, which was raised in the south part of Montgomery County near Waveland, there are thirteen children, all living, the oldest being 67 and the youngest 46 years of age, respectively: John and James McMains, of Waveland; Samuel McMains, of Morton; Phillip McMains, of Rossville, Ill.; Mrs. W. R. Kelso, of Waveland; Mrs. H. C. Ellis, of Rossville, Ill.; Anderson McMains, of Crawfordsville; Mrs. J. E. Petty, of Mammoth Spring, Ark.; D. H. McMains, of Hoopeston, Ill.; Mrs. H. A. Pratt, Lloyd McMains, Mrs. J. F. Alfrey, of Waveland, and Robert McMains Jr. of Crawfordsville, all of whom were present except D. H. McMains and Mrs. J. E. Petty.
