CLODFELTER REUNIONS
Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Review, June 29, 1878
A family reunion was held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. M. Clodfelter, of Ripley township, on the 29th inst., it being the fortieth anniversary of their wedding day. Mr. Clodfelter is a native of North Carolina and came with his parents to Putnam county, Indiana, in 1830, and is now 61 years old. Mrs. C is a native of Tennessee. She came to this state in 1828, at which time she was nine years old. They have five children deceased, and have eight children and eight grand children living who were present to enjoy the reunion. At 10 a.m. the aged parents were led by their children into the room prepared for the occasion, and were invited to give a history of their past lives, which they did in a very impressive manner, after which the following toasts were proposed. Our parents- those who love us first, who love us best, and who forget us last. Our parents-in-law - those who smile upon us first at the period of manhood and womanhood; they next to our parents, are the dearest friends on earth.
Tribute to Ma & Pa - But simple and short is the tribute I offer to you this morning, but as it is grains of sand that form the great desert, so with this life, and the joys of this day; the humble may add their mite, and if it be acceptable, all is well. In this simple tribute, love, respect and best wishes are given you by one whom by marital law you have seen it to christen "a son." 40 years ago today with you all was merry as a marriage bell. You were gazing on the future with as bright hopes as we, your children, are today. Through the adverse storms as well as the bright days of life you have toiled successfully and you are still here to welcome us to your familiar home. -- thanks to Kim H
