Canine Reunion

The eighteenth annual reunion of the decendants of Peter and Ralph Canine was held at the Old Union Church on Sunday, August 9. Some one hundred relative and friends and descendents gathered in the Church yard at the noon hour, and after invocation by Rev. J.M. Caldwell the bounteous dinner was enjoyed. A very interesting program had been prepared and was carried out under the direction of Rev. G. M. Wilson of Rushville. Mrs. Mollie Canine Oldshue, representing the Jackson Canine family, welcomed the guests. Margaret Oberton, Frankfort, representing the James Canine branch, read "The Minister's Call". Mary Martin, New Market, representing the Peter Canine branch, read "Not Homesick". Little Metty Lou Canine, of Marshall, carried off the honors for the Cornelius Canine branch with her rendition of "Howdy, the Fly Story", "Bumblebee", and "The Watermelon". Mrs. Dora Lydick Wilson of Rushville, from the James Canine branch, read "Negro Funeral". Mrs. Bertha Canine Spencer had a copy of the Peter Canine will executed in Shelby County, Kentucky, January 8, 1841. J.M. Hanley of Franklin, gave a very interesting account of his family, he coming from the Andrew Canine family of Shelby County, Kentucky. Letters were read from O.C. Lyons, Burlinggame, Kas., Henry Canine, Ashland, Oregon, Mrs. Sidney B. Canine, Hood River, Oregon, I Newt Brown Franklin, and Mrs. Mary Miller of Newark, Ohio. The following officers were elected for newt year.: President, E.N. Canine, Terre Haute; vice-pres.,Jesse Canine, Crawfordsville; secretary, Mrs. Ben Wilhite, Crawfordsville; treasurer, Charles Canine, Marshall. Rev. G.S. Wilson of Richmond closed the meeting with his most appropriate remarks on "Our Influence". The next anniversary will mark the 100th year of the settlement of Ralph Canine on the farm now occupied by his great-granddaughter, Mollie Oldshue, and also the founding of Old Union Church by the Baptists and sponsored by the family of Ralph Canine. It is the plan to make this next meeting one that will celebrate in a fitting manner this epoch in the history of Montgomery County. Those present from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Joen L. Gobin and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gobin, Paris, Ill; J.F. Hanley and son, Franklin; Mrs. Lydia Mymore, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Louis Myers, Bedford; Rev. G.S. Wilson and family, Rushville; James B. Wilhite, Indianapolis; Mrs. Belle Davis and Mrs. Oberton and daughter of Frankfort; Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Causy and two daughters of West Union; Mrs. Anna Lee, Mr. and Mrs. Cary Lee and son, Harmon Lee, Mrs. Lora Crouch, Mr. and Mrs. E.N. Phillips, Indianapolis, M.M. Canine and wife, James Russell, Charles Canine and wife, Mrs. Cecil Canine and daughter, of Marshall. J.O. McCormick, of Williamsport, who left this country thirty years ago, a great friend of the Canine family, was among the guests.
