Uncle Jesse Cumberland entertained a distinguished guest this week in the person of Dr. John Lane of Louisville, Ky whom he had not seen in 48 years. Mr. Lane is now 82 years of age and practiced medicine in this county over 50 years ago, being located at Pleasant Hill the greater part of the time. He moved from there to Illinois and later on drifted down into Texas where he was when the late war broke out. During the long seige that followed he was cast in a Confederate prison where he remained long enough for the cruel handcuffs to crush his wrists for life. What must be the feelings of such a veteran returning to the scenes of his youth after a half century of busy progress to find most of his former acquaintances numbered with the heroic dead. This is something that the present generation may well stop and consider. It is to be regretted that such noble benefactors are not accorded a more hearty welcome when they come among us.
