CW Casualties, Brown Township - Montgomery InGenWeb Project

1. Henry Meredith Alward, 40th Indiana Infantry, Company H, died of disease April 18, 1863, at Murfreesboro Tennessee - unknown burial assumedly Murfreesboro. He married Lydia Birth in Fountain County Indiana on 11 March 1859 and to my knowledge had no children. His parents were Henry Arista Alward and Maria Eva DeCamp. He was one of 10 children.

2. Joseph Belton, 40th Indiana Infantry, Company H, died March 28, 1865 at army hospital, Jeffersonville, Indiana -- buried in Waveland Presbyterian Cemetery with many of his comrades with wife Mary Elinor Hamilton. He was a major in the 11th Militia, Dec 8, 1863. He married Mary E. Hamilton in 1856 in New Lisbon Ohio - at the time of his death they had William, age 7; Elizabeth Belle age 3, Carrie Josephine age 1 and two had passed away as small children. She never remarried and died at her home on East Green Street in Waveland 19 October in 1913, having lived without her man just shy of 50 years.

3. John T. Budd, 9th Indiana Battery, died March 17, 1862 of disease - buried Waveland Presbyterian Church Cemetery. He was born to Casper and Calistan Ann Stratton Budd - born 18 January 1841 probably in Wayne County, Indiana. He was one of 10 children, 5 sons, 5 daughters.

4. William G. Canine, 38th Indiana Infantry, Company H, died of disease 1863 in Tennessee. 98% sure he is the Pvt. William G. Canine born April 23, 1837 in Waveland to John Richard Canine and Eliza Guinn. He is buried Nov 13, 1862 in the IOOF Cemetery Crawfordsville -- "findagrave says - enlisted Co H 38th Ind Oct 4, 1861; died of disease Nov 13, 1862 four hours after returning home to Crawfordsville on a medical discharge." How sad. He had four brothers and four sisters.

5.Caleb W. Conner, 40th Indiana Infantry, Company C, ; died of disease Oct. 22, 1864 at Nashville, Tennessee - buried Nashville National Cemetery, Davidson County, Tennessee Plot Section G Site 8091 (or 8071). He married Elizabeth A. Jones (daughter of Daniel Jones and Jane Brush who passed away before he went to the war. He was one of four sons and four daughters of Caleb Conner and Susannah Teeter.

6. Josiah Davis, (Browns Valley) 40th Indiana Infantry, Company C, killed Nov. 25, 1863, battle of Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga, Tennessee (born March 1837 Montgomery County, Indiana - buried Freedom Cemetery near Waveland Indiana - on Highway 234).

7. Atelus H. (incorrect Atellus Lurton) Dooley, 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery (born Oct 16, 1838 Parke County Indiana son of Silas S. Dooley and Sarah Ann Landon - Enlisted 3-17-1864 Pvt), Company H, died July 19, 1864 (taken prisoner) at Baton Rouge Louisiana buried at the National Cemetery there. Tombstone #356. Plot 7, 366. Wife Sarah Warden Cord - they had three very small children (Lilly, Rufus, Atellus H) when he was killed.

8. . James Elrod, 40th Indiana Infantry, Company C, killed Nov. 25, 1863, battle of Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga, Tennessee -- buried Chattanooga National Cemetery (Hamilton Co Tenn) with listing as having diied Dec 8, 1863 "Co C 40th Indiana - (from findagrave.com) - Resident of Browns Valley Ind. "He is buried among men who died in early December of wounds, so perhaps he was hurt at Mission Ridge but later died. Section D Site 12017

9. James Cameron Fullenwider, 33rd Indiana Infantry, Company E, killed at battle of Thompson's Station, Tennessee - died March 5, 1863 - although his name is on his parents' tombstone )Eleazer and Lavinia - tombstone spells name Fullinwider) in the Waveland Presbyterian Cemetery, his remains were never returned to Waveland.

10. Sgt. William B. Galey, (Browns Valley) 40th Indiana Infantry, Company C, died Dec. 12, 1863, wounds from battle of Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga, Tennessee - buried Freedom Cemetery near Waveland, Montgomery County, Indiana (highway 234). Click on his name above to see him picture at findagrave.com

11. William Garland, 9th Indiana Battery, died Oct. 21, 1864 of disease (born Aug 16, 1842 - Scott B, my Civil War guru says the battery rosters say he was mustered out but those are incorrect) - he is buried (or perhaps just a stone as many who died in the CW were not returned) in Waveland Presbyterian Church, Waveland, Montgomery County, Indiana. He was one of six sons (and two daughters) born to Benjamin Garland and Lucinda Clore (daughter of Israel Clore and Frances Deere), very early settlers in Brown Township.

12. James A. Ham, 40th Indiana Infantry, Company H, died August 20, 1864 . His remains are in Plot E #2901 at the Nashville (Davidson Co) Tennesse National Cemetery. Love to find out more about this man :(

13. Clinton G. Hamilton, 40th Indiana Infantry, Company C, died July 25, 1862, army hospital, Jeffersonville, Indiana - son of Alexander and Elizabeth Ramsey Hamilton. Buried Providence Cemetery, Mulberry Clinton County, Indiana.

14. Thomas Hamilton, 40th Indiana Infantry, Company C, 2nd Brigade 2nd Division 4th Army Corps. Lived in Browns Valley, Indiana Mustered in on Dec 6, 1861 killed June 14, 1864, battle of Pine Mountain, Georgia. Buried Marietta National Cemetery, Cobb County, Georgia Plot H: 8616 - originally buried north of Pine Mountain - moved with others here.

15. 1st LT. James M. Hanna, 40th Indiana Infantry, Company C, died Feb. 4, 1864, (findagrave has Feb 28 Hamilton County, Tenn) wounds from battle of Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga, Tennessee - very nice stone in Freedom Cemetery, Waveland, Montgomery County, Indiana - born August 19, 1836 Brown Township, Montgomery County, Indiana. He and Robert C. H. Hanna are brothers, brave sons of James Hanna (1800-1862) and Sarah Wilcox (1809-1868) - James 1800 was the son of James Hanna (1764-1820) and Martha Poage. James 1800 was the father of 9 children, 4 boys and 5 daughters. Two of his sons, of course were killed in the war. (his picture is on findagrave.com)

16. Cpl. Robert C. H. Hanna, 40th Indiana Infantry, Company C, killed Nov. 25, 1863, battle of Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga, Tennessee - brother of above Lt. James Hanna - died Chattanooga Nov 25, 1863 born Sept 6, 1842. See above for parentage. This family was one of the many in the Waveland-Browns Valley area from Shelby County, Kentucky.

17. James H. Jackson, 40th Indiana Infantry, Company H, killed April 27, 1865 when the steam boat "Sultana" exploded on the Mississippi River bringing Union P.O.W.'s home. James was captured at battle of Franklin Tennessee Nov. 1864

18. Cpl. William Kennedy, (Browns Valley) 40th Indiana Infantry, Company C, died March 19, 1862, Bowling Green, Kentucky -- index to Nashville (Davidson Co) Tenn National Cemetery has him buried in Section N Site 10280 - Co. C 40th Indiana Infantry but died March 21, 1862.

19. Jacob L. Lough, 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery, Company H (enlisted 3-29-1864), died Sept. 17, 1864 2nd Battle of Baton Rouge, Louisiana

20. John W. McDaniel, 38th Indiana Infantry, Company H, killed Oct. 8, 1862 at battle of Perryville, Kentucky - may be the one "buried in the National Cemetery, Nashville, Tenn" - Memorial #3195312 - born 1830 died 1862 - "died of typhoid pneumonia at Planters Hote, in Nashville. "Born in Indiana," (probably Parke County near Byron area) son of James and Sarah King McDaniel. He married Elizabeth Ulrey and they had four children. The wife died at age 30 and their four children, two dying young were raised by relatives.

21. Taylor McIntosh, 40th Indiana Infantry, Company H, died Dec. 16, 1863, wounds from battle of Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga, Tennessee - buried Chattanooga National Cemetery, Hamilton Co Tenn Plot D #`12204 (no picture of grave on findagrave)

22. Harrison Taylor Moore, 40th Indiana Infantry, Company H, died May 29, 1864 from wounds received at battle of Resca, Georgia - son of Abram Jacob and Miriam Rice Moore. He first enlisted July 10, 1863 Co K, 111th Infantry - mustered out July 15, 1863 in Indianapolis but joined the 40th very early in 1864. Wounded at the battle of Resaca he died of wounds there. Buried Waveland Presbyterian Cemetery, Waveland, Montgomery County, Indiana with several of his comrades.

23. William P. Moore -15th Indiana Infantry Co E - died of wounds received at Stones River - Feb 5, 1863 (Murfreesboro, Tennessee)

24. John A. Musgrove 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery, Company H (enlisted 7-21-1861), died 8-5-1862 1st Battle of Baton Rouge, Louisiana

25. William Oliver, 40th Indiana Infantry, Company C, killed June 27, 1864 at battle of Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia

26. Charles Osborn, 40th Indiana Infantry, Company H, died of disease, Nov. 17, 1865 at Texana, Texas

27. Luther H. Patton, 38th Indiana Infantry (mustered in 10-20-1864), Company H, died Feb. 20, 1865 at Chattanooga, Tennessee

28. Milton H. Porter, "recruited" Oct 4, 1862 - 40th Indiana Infantry, Company H, died June 30th, 1864, wounds from battle of Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia -- Plot J #9759 Marietta National Cemetery, Cobb County, Georgia - from Waveland (RR) Montgomery County, Indiana - he was also in several battles including Stones River, Missouri Ridge. The surgeon at 2nd Brig. 2nd Div 4th Army Corps Hospital wrote of Milton's diagnosis, "Gun-shot wound, both thighs and abdoment. Flesh wound of thigh penetrating abdomen." Thus, he lived 3 days after he was in the battle.

29. Ransom Ragan - 40th Indiana Infantry - Co. H - 5-1-1863 (however the battle there was not until the 3rd of the next month - perhaps he was ill?) Died Milliken's Bend, LA

30. J.W. Richards, 38th Indiana Infantry, Company H, died Sept. 20, 1864 at Tullahoma, Tennessee - age 28 years on tombstone in Waveland Presbyterian Cemetery (with several others) Montgomery County, Indiana

31. Chauncey Richardson, 38th Indiana Infantry (mustered in 10-20-1864), Company H, died of disease, May 5, 1865 at Beaufort, South Carolina buried Beaufort National Cemetery. #276 Section 5 - died of chronic dysentery at the 1st DIvidial General Hospital May 5, 1865. Co H 38th Ind Inf.

32. George W. Rodgers, 40th Indiana Infantry, Company H, missing in action, supposed killed battle of Franklin, Tennessee - battle on November 30, 1864 -- missing after Battle of Franklin, Tennessee

33. William Smith, 40th Indiana Infantry, Company C (mustered in Pvt 9-18-1861), died disease April 7, 1863 at Murfreesboro, Tennessee - another source says Killed at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky 10-8-1862 but I believe (kbz) that he was killed at Murfreesboro - he is buried in Plot O - 5887 - his small tombstone has Wm. Smith 5887 Ind. Records say he served Co C 40th Ind Inf (Son of Union Veterans recorded the findagrave memorial.

34. Samuel W. Sterrett, 38th Indiana Infantry, Company H, killed Oct. 8, 1862 at battle of Perryville, Kentucky

35.. William N. VanCleve, (Browns Valley) 40th Indiana Infantry, Company C, died April 12, 1862, Nashville, Tennessee

36. Horace H. White, 31st Indiana Infantry, Company I, died Aug. 26, 1865, Victoria, Texas - would like to know more to compare these two but fairly sure it is the same one - Horace H. White died 8-26-1865 birth unknown. Buried Alexandria National Parish Pineville, Rapides Parish, Louisiana Plot 279

John M. CASSADY - Montgomery County 38th Indiana Infantry (mustered in 9-18-1861) - lived in the Portland Mills area. Died from wounds on 9-2-1864 which were received in Jonesboro GA battle the day before - buried Marietta National Cem, Cobb County, Georgia Plot F: #4915

Thomas NOON - Montgomery County 38th Indiana Infantry Co. H - (mustered in 9-18-1861) - died Nasvhille, Tenn 9-2-1863 of bronichitis at the Cumberland Gap General Hospital. Buried Nashville National Cemetery, Davidson County, Tenn Plot D #3423

Charles E. FOWLER - Montgomery County 38th Indiana Infantry (mustered in 9-18-1861) - died Atlanta, Georgia 8-26-1864 "struck in the right breast / clavicle and killed by stray musket balls from the skirmish line while lying carelessly on top of the regimental breastworks near Atlanta. His mother applied for a federal pension April 23, 1874 (Certificate #172 830) - Buried Marietta, Cobb County, Georia Plot H #9088.

Albert MITCHELL -- 40th Indiana Infantry - Co. H - deserted 4-1-1862 --

Jacob T. PALMER - 40th Indiana Infantry - Co. H - deserted 6-24-1865 -- Source: History of Vigo & Parke Counties, Indiana. Chicago: HH Hill 1880. says he was born Nov 20, 1846 in Clington County, Indiana son of Prentice T. and Ella Born Dazey Palmer. Lived in Montgomery County Indiana until 1867; moved to Parke County in 1875; Edgar Co IL 1878 back to Parke County. Feb 4, 1863, he enlisted in Co H 40th Ind Vols. Participated in most battles of the regiment taking part in 9 engagements. Under fire on the Atlanta Campaign 77 continual days. - was with Sherman's Campaign - battles of Columbia, Franklin and Nashville. Discharged July 1865 at New Orleans, LA. Twice wounded by a shell and a mini-ball but never reported to a hospital. Masrried Malinda Jane Ware 2 October 1867 and they were parents of five girls and one son.

George F. JOSLIN - 40th Indiana Infantry - Co. H - died in Indianapolis 12-1-1862 (assumedly from disease?)
