The annual reunion of Co. E, 72d Regiment Ind. Vol., was held at John Greenburg’s, north of Sugar Grove, on Saturday, Sept. 22. There were thirteen members of the Company with their families present, also several invited guests, altogether about 80 persons being present. The crowd had gathered by about 11 o’clock. Mr. and Mrs. Greenburg had raised a large tent on their lawn, under which three long tables were set. The visitors all brought well-filled baskets and at 1 o’clock the tables were laden with everything that heart could wish, and after all had partaken of the good chicken, beef, ham, bread and butter and everything else good to eat, ice cream and cake finished the menu. After dinner was over the old soldiers scattered about in different parts of the yard, telling of the haps and mishaps while soldiering for Uncle Sam in the Civil War. Soon there was heard that well remembered bugle sound, still familiar to those who wore the blue, the call to duty and to which all responded—this time was the call to a business meeting with Tom Shepherd, of Crawfordsville, as chairman and Lem McClamroch as secretary. The election of officers for the coming year resulted in an unanimous vote that all the old officers hold over for another year. The chairman then read a few brief letters from comrades who were not able and regretted very much not to be present. Then came the presentation to Mr. and Mrs. Greenburg of a handsome flag for their kindness and hospitality in entertaining the company. The presentation was made by Col. Thompson of Lafayette who gave a very nice talk for the occasion and we dare say they were indeed proud of the gift of the Stars & Stripes. After this a few short talks were given, Joseph Bottenberg of Wingate gave a short talk and said he hoped to be with them at many other reunions. Then Col. Thompson made an address in which he told of some of the close places he and the Company were in during the Civil War. Upon adjourning every one bad Mr. and Mrs. Greenburg a kind goodbye and with the wish that they might live to see many more such happy reunions as this one they had made. – --- transcribed by kbz
