Paul Barcus was born in Linden, Indiana July 13, 1862 and died December 27, 1925 at Crawfordsville from an unexpected and quick stroke. He practiced in Odell, in Tippecanoe County but mainly in New Richmond and Crawfordsville at the local hospital. He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Crawfordsville, Indiana. He attended school at the Medical College in Cincinnati, Ohio, graduating in 1887. He married Sue Kirkpatrick in 1888 and they had at least two children, Paul K. and Gertrude who married at age 41 to Thomas Nugen Smith. Paul married Nellie Vivian Walden in Chicago age 30 and they were the parents of Paul and Bob, whom Dr. Paul would barely have known since they were so young when he passed away. In 1905, when he applied for a passport, he gave his height as 5'8", his hair dark; eyes, blue, a "straight mouth and straight nose", fair complected. Frank O. Maxwell signed as witness, saying he had known Paul Barcus personally for 24 years. He and his wife, Sue went to Liverpool, England on the ship, Ivernia, of the Cunard Steamship Company, arriving on September 6, 1905. A volunteer in the Spanish-American War, he was a doctor (assistant surgeon) in the 158th Indiana Volunteers from the 26th of April in 1898 to the 4th of November that same year. Affiliated with the local physician groups, he was also a Fellow of the American College of American Surgeons. -- kbz
