1914-1918 Jennings County. Son of Jacob and Sarah Bloom Bertman; born September 19, 1887, Indianapolis, Ind. Family moved to North Vernon, Jennings County, Ind., the following year. Educated in Purdue University, and West Point Military Academy. Commissioned Captain; assigned to 1st U.S. Engineering Corps. Stationed in
Washington, D.C., in June 1917. Overseas in July, 1917, and died of pneumonia, September 18, 1917, St. Nazaire, France. Buried at St. Nazaire. The American Legion Post, North Vernon, Ind., is named in his honor. He is on the end of the top row wearing the dark shirt.
