REPUBLICAN CONVENTION
NORTH VERNON PLAIN DEALER - February 1, 1876

Vernon, January 29th, 1876
    The Republican Mass Convention, for the purpose of appointing delegates to the State Convention at Indianapolis on Feb. 22nd, and to other nominating conventions, met pursuant to call of the chairman of the County Central Committee. The convention was called to order by Mr. John Carney, Chairman Central Committee. Mr. J. B. Smith was elected temporary chairman.
    On call of townships all reported represented.
    On motion, a committee of the townships was appointed to select delegates to the nominating conventions. The committee reported the following delegates and central committeemen for the different townships:

    On motion, Smith Vawter was appointed delegate at large to the State convention.
    On motion, Col. Andrews was appointed delegate at large to the congressional convention.
    On motion, John Overmyer was appointed delegate at large to the senatorial convention.
    On motion, Lewis F. Brougher was appointed delegate to the joint-representative convention.
    Resolves, That, recognizing in Oliver. Morton, the greatest of War Governors of the Union, the distinguished and incorruptible Senator, and the ablest advocate of Republican principles, now living, we declare him our choice for President of the United States.
    Resolved, That, we have heard with great pleasure, the proposition to place our old friend and fellow-citizen, Hon. H. C. Newcombe, now of Indianapolis, in nomination for Supreme Judge, from this district; that we cordially endorse such nomination and would delight to do him honor.
    Resolved, That, holding in high estimation, integrity and ability upon the judicial bench, we commend the Hon. John G. Berkshire for re-nomination, and instruct our delegates in district convention to give him their support.
    On motion, the Secretaries were ordered to send copies of the proceedings of this convention to the county papers and to the Indianapolis Journal for publication.

    After the convention adjourned the Central Committeemen of the different townships met and elected John Overmyer of Center township, Chairman of the Central Committee.
