Obituary - March 23, 1911, North Vernon Plain Dealer, Page 4

Daniel Allen Hutchings, son of Thomas Y. and Mary A Hutchings was born March 10, 1848 near Greenville, Tennessee. He was one of five children, of whom two young sisters were laid to rest in Tennessee, before the family moved to Indiana, at which time Daniel was seventeen years of age. They spent one year in Colubus, Ind., then came to make their permanent home at Scipio. At about twenty years of age Daniel Hutchings consecrated his young life to the cause of Christ and became a member of Scipio Bethel Church.
Two years later he was united in marriage to Lida Cadby and to them were intrusted seven children of whom two sons and two daughters have grown to manhood and womanhood in our midst and became honored useful members of society and church. After months of patient suffering, death came to Mr. Hutchings on March 12, 1911, opening the door to him to a more beautiful way of living and leaving for our heritage a tender pleasant memory. The forty-six years of Mr. Hutching's life here as friend and neighbor and the forty-three years of christian fellowship mean so much more than is told in this brief summary of his life that we are constrained to add a personal tribute that will find its echo in the hearts of those who enjoyed his friendship. It has been said by one, that a quiet life often makes itself felt in better ways that one which the world sees and applauds. The gift of leadership was not given to Mr. Hutchings but his was a gift quite as fine and as rare, that of happy, hopeful, living-simply doing the common round of duties so faithfully and cheerfully as to spread a contagion of happiness in his neighborhood, and this we hold is true Christian service, to be happy and make others so.
"So take joy home and make a place in thy great heart for her
And give her time to grow, and cherish her,
Then will she come and oft will sing to thee,
When thou art working in the furrows; ay,
It is a comely fashion to be glad,
Joy is the grace we say to God."
So it was this gift of happiness that made it such a pleasure to respond to the sure and hearty greeting he called out as one passed him in his home by the side of the road. It was this that made him the friend of little children, and this too that helped to make beautiful the life-long comradship with his twin brother. We like to think of him in his new home of eternal sunshine and joy, fiving the same cheery greeting to the friends and neighbors who have preceded him in recent years. May we be inspired to cultivate more of this rare grace in our own lives so we too may reach that purest heaven.
Be to other souls the cup of strength,
Enkindle generous ardor, feel pure love
Be the sweet presence of a good diffused.
So shall we join the choir invisibel
Whose music is the gladness of the world. Findagrave Link
