GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
North Vernon Plain Dealer - January 7, 1915
Commiskey Column

When hand in hand for fifty years, through joys and through sorrows, one man and one woman have faced life's battles and remained constant and faithful to each other, it is surely a golden time to remember. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. W. Allen, of Ferncliff, celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary, on Saturday December 26, 1914 by giving a dinner and having the children and grandchildren so far as possible, at home for the happy occasion. Covers were laid for thirty-three. Mr. Allen served in the Union army during the Civil War. He was an active member of the Indianapolis Fire Department, from 1879 to 1902, when he was retired on account of illness. After his retirement, he and Mrs. Allen purchased their country home at Ferncliff, near Commiskey and it has been the happy headquarters for children, grand-children, relatives and friends, to spend their vacations ever since. Mr. and Mrs. Allen are the parents of eleven children, seven of whom are living. They have sixteen grand-children and two great-grand-children. Among those present were: Wm. E. Allen, Robert Allen, wife and son, W.H. Torbet and wife, Misses Grace, Vera Blanche and Merle Torbet, Earl Beck and Wm. Allen Jr., all of Indianapolis, Mr. and Mrs. J.V.R. Allen, of Witchita, Kansas, George B. Allen, of Louisville, Ky., Mrs. Mattie Rockafeller and daughter, Miss Henrietta Fewell, of Aurora, Mr. and Mrs. Goss Allen and family, and neighbors of Commiskey. One of their grand daughters, Miss Vera Torbet, decided to celebrate the occasion in her own way. She and Earl Beck drove to Vernon and were quietly married, returning in time to participate in the wedding feast, which was thus converted into a double anniversary. The occasion was one of much rejoicing and every one joined in wishing both the old and young couples much joy.
