TWO SANDCREEK WOMEN
From a undated newspaper clipping at the Jennings County Public Library

Edna (Hooker) Littell 1886 - 1957
Edna Hooker began teaching at the age of 15 at Sherwood School in Sand Creek Township. Many of her students were older and bigger than she was.
At that time, many school teachers were single ladies who boarded with families in the community.     In return of room and board, the women served as tutors and babysitters.
Edna's teaching career ended when she married Vado Littell in 1903.
Three of her descendants, grandsons Narlon Littell and Paul Sutherland, and great-grandaughter, Natalie Kellar, became teachers.
Maude (Hooker) Beesley 1885 - 1973
Maude Hooker taught at Fish Creek and maybe Walnut Grove School prior to 1913. She married Isaac Beesley in 1910 and they had one son Herbert L.
Her teaching career spanned a 10-year period.
Maude's daughter-in-law Evelyn Beesley, remembers the former teacher as one who was not much for a lot of nonsense. "I bet everybody had to toe the mark," she said.
Herbert, as well as his three sons, "Bud," "Bill" and Bob," all attended the Walnut Grove School.

Edna and Maude were sisters, their parents being Ezra Hooker and Eva (Storey) Hooker. I believe this clipping is from about 1989 when the Walnut Grove School was moved to it current location by Muscatatuck Park.
