William Stewart
Daily Journals
1853 to 1914

William was born in Ohio 3 Jul 1832 moved to Jennings County Indiana in 1852, settling in Spencer Twp.
His journals are remarkable in that they cover local history as well as family events. He tells of hearing lots of talk of the war coming in 1861. How they moved the house down with 11 yoke of cattle. The river rising and always the weather to contend with, too dry quickly followed too wet. Fording the river was a common occurrence and at times prevented them from attending church.

William writes of the death of his son Wilbur, who died Sep 24, 1875 at the age of two. To be followed by his beloved wife's death on Nov 22, 1875. As he says, "It is a very sad time for me." He is left with 3 small children, Lawrence, Emma & Ed.

The following year he married Serelda Spencer Gibbs. Serelda was widowed from George Gibbs and she had 2 children, Charles & Richard, living at the time of her marriage to William Stewart. She and William have two more children, Joe & Bess.

William was a prosperous farmer owning a great deal of land and loaning money to people at times. From his notes only one man failed to repay his debt to him...Dessie Meek.

A strong man who did what had to be done without complaining and set a fine example for his children. His last years were sad in that rheumatism was so painful he was unable to move enough to take care of his farm. He died 1914. Serelda lived until 1921.

It was a privilege to transcribe William's journals. Every effort was made to do it accurately.
The goal is to contribute to William's history being accessible to all, now and in the future.

FAMILY PHOTO'S

The Caption on this photo is confusing. First Emma Stewart was a daughter of William not his sister. It is actually the family of Emma Stewart's husband John George Euler. He is listed as George in the picture on the back row. His parents in the center on the front row are George and Wilemina "Minnie" (Marhour) Euler. Wilhemina is incorrectly labeled as Emma. The others in the picture are the other children of George & Minnie Euhler.
