CHARLES HELT DIES SUDDENLY
    Charles Helt, 84, died unexpectedly this afternoon at the home of his son, Scott Helt, on old Road 9, east of the city.
    He was reported to have been stricken while helping with the farm work.
    Mr. Helt had been to Louisville with a truck driver after a load of fertilizer. On their return they started uploading and he was stricken with a heart attack a few minutes later.

Funeral at Reddington for Well-Known Farmer Who Died Suddenly

    Funeral services for Charles F. W. Helt, 84, who died unexpectedly Wednesday afternoon at the home of a son, Scott Helt, on Road 9 east of the city, will be held at 10:30 o'clock Saturday morning at the Reddington church, conducted by the Rev. William DeHart of Elizabethtown. Burial will we at the Reddington cemetery.
    Friends may call after 5 o'clock this evening at the Flanigan, Reed and Hull funeral home where the casket will be open until 10 o'clock Friday morning. At that time it will be moved to the Scott Helt residence and remain open there until going to the church.
    Mr. Helt was the first of a family of nine children to die, the youngest member now being 64 years old. He was born near Scipio and spent practically all of his life on the same farm. At one time he operated what was known as Helt's Mill near his home.
    He and Mrs. Helt, who preceded him in death in 1933, had seven children, all of whom still reside in the community where they were born. They include five sons, Scott, William, Chris, Chester and Jacob Helt, and two daughters, Mrs. Eddie Thompson [error Reed Thompson] and Mrs. Geprge Hughes.
    Other survivors are 17 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and six brothers and two sisters, George, William, Frank, Louis, John and Harmon Helt, Mrs. Lee Bowman and Mrs. Alice Hines. Find A Grave Link

ILLNESS FATAL TO NELLIE HELT

    Well Known Resident of the Helt Mill Community Dies After Long Sickness
    Mrs. Nellie Helt, 65, wife of Charles Helt, died last night at 11:20 o'clock at her home near the Helt Mill, southeast of the city. Death was due to a complication of diseases and followed a long illness. She had been in declining health for more than a year. Some time ago she fell and fractured her arm which aggravated her condition. She had been bedfast since last Thanksgiving.
    Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock at the Reddington Christian church. Burial will be made in the Reddington cemetery.
    Mrs. Helt was a lifelong resident of the county and spent her entire life here. She was married in 1884 and for 46 years the family has lived in the present home. She was a splendid woman, a devoted wife and mother and had many friends.
    Surviving are five sons, Scott, William, Christopher, Chester and Jacob, all of this county; two daughters, Mrs. Marietta Thompson, of Scipio, Mrs. George W. Hughes, of this county; three sisters Mrs. Marietta Stauffer, of Los Angeles, Mrs. Sherman Seward, of Bloomington, and Mrs. Ethel Dennison, of this county; and 15 grandchildren. Find A Grave Link

Thompson rites on Thursday at Columbus
    Marietta Thompson, 97, Columbus, died at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday at the Columbus Convalescent Center.
    Mrs. Thompson was born on December 2, 1889, in the Helts Mill area on Sand Creek in Bartholomew County, the daughter of Charles F. and Nellie Dennison Helt. She married Amick Reed Thompson on March 12, 1913, and he preceded her in death on May 26, 1930. She was a member of the Sandy Hook United Methodist Church in Columbus and the Willing Workers Sunday School Class.
    Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Weddle of Indianapolis, Catherine Ahlbrand and Jeanette Fivecoat, both of Columbus; one son Dondald C. Thompson of Scipio; ten grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Also preceding her in death were one sister and five brothers.
    Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Hathaway-Myers Funeral Chapel in Columbus. Calling hours will be from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday Burial will be in the Garland Brook Cemetery at Columbus. Find A Grave Link


Columbus Republic - May 26, 1930

REED THOMPSON, SCIPIO, EXPIRES

    Amick Reed Thompson, 44 years old, of Scipio, died in the county hospital here today at noon following a severe illness. Mr. Thompson underwent a surgical operation for ulcers of the stomach about a week ago but his condition at that time was such that little hope was held for his recovery. The body has been moved to the Hege & Flanigan funeral home, Fifth and Pearl streets, but as yet funeral arrangements have not been made.
    Mr. Thompson had lived in this vicinity of Scipio all of his life and was well known. He was a farmer and was successful in that line of work, and was an active member of the Odd Fellows and Encampment and Modern Woodmen lodges. For years he had been a member of the Scipio Presbyterian church, and was a highly esteemed man.
    Surviving are his wife and four children, Donald, 15; Dorothy, 13; Katherine, 3, and Janet, two months; his mother, Mrs. Mary Thompson, and a sister, Mrs. Arlie Arbuckle, of near Grammar.

Reed Thompson Answers Call

    Amick Reed Thompson aged 41, who lived three miles north of Scipio, died at Barthlomew County Hospital at Columbus, on last Monday forenoon.
    Mr. Thompson's death followed an operation for ulcers of the stomach. His condition has been so bad from the first, that little hope was held for his recovery.
    Mr. Thompson was born and raised in the neighborhood of Scipio and was actively engaged in farming at which he was very successful. He was a member of the Scipio Presbyterian Church for many years and was highly esteemed by all. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge and of the Modern Woodmen Lodge at that place.
    He leaves the wife and four children; Donald, aged 15, Dorothy aged 13; Catherine aged 3 and Jeanette, aged 3 months. His mother, Mrs Mary Thompson and a sister Mrs. Pearl Arbuckle, near Elizabethtown also survive him.
    Funeral services were conducted from the Scipio Presbyterian church by the Rev. Sharp of Columbus, assisted by the local minister, Rev. A.R. Miles. Burial was made at the Garland Brook cemetery in Columbus. Find A Grave Link

Chester C. Helt
    Chester C. Helt, 86, Columbus R13, died at 8 p.m. Monday at Winter Haven (Fla.) Hospital after a one-year illness.
    A retired farmer, he was member of Reddington Christian Church.
    Born March 2, 1894, in Bartholomew County, he was son of the late Charles F. W. and Nellie Dennison Helt. He married Alma Hook on Nov. 1, 1919 in Bartholomew County. She preceded him in death on August 9, 1955. He married Nancy Luckey on Oct. 6, 1956. She survives.
    Other survivors are: two daughters, Mrs. Merrill (Joan) Jones, Indianapolis; and Mrs. Ed. (Cathleen) Wiley, Elizabethtown R1; one step-daughter Mrs. Delmer (Frances) Buescher, Elizabethown R1; three brothers, Scott Helt, Seymour R2; Christopher Helt, Columbus; and Jake Helt, Elizabethtown R1; one sister Mrs. Marietta Thompson, Columbus; two stepgrandchildren; four great-stepgrandchildren; 14 grandchildren; and one great-great-grandaughter.
    Two sons, one sister and one brother preceded him in death.
    Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday from Burkholder Chapel with the Rev. Bill Weaver officiating. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
    Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday at Burkholder Funeral Home and from 8 a.m. until time of service Friday.

William H. Helt dies on Saturday
    William H. Helt, 89, of Columbus, a native of Jennings county, died at 11:15 a.m. Saturday at the Columbus Convalescent Center. He was a retired farmer.
    Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hathaway-Myers Funeral Home, Columbus, by the Rev. Dallas Collins burial was at Reddington Cemetery.
    Mr. Helt was born September 30, 1887, in Jennings, son of the late Charles F. W. and Nellie Denison Helt. He had lived most of his life in Bartholomew county and was an Army veteran of World War I.
    He is survived by four brothers, Jacob Helt of Azalia, Scott, Chris and Chester Helt all of Columbus; two sisters, Marietta Thompson, Columbus, and Mrs. George Hughes, Jennings county.

Elizabethtown Woman Dies - Rites Thursday

    Mrs. Lucille H. Hughes, 80, of Elizabethtown R1, died Monday night in Jackson County Schneck Memorial Hospital. She had been ill for some time.
    She was a member of the Rock Creek Methodist Church and the Rock Creek Ladies Aid.
    Born Sept. 7, 1896, in Bartholomew County, she was a daughter of the late Charles F. W. and Nellie Dennison Helt.
    On Dec. 28, 1918, she married George Hughes of Elizabethtown. He survives.
    Other survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Garrett (Betty) Williams, of Edinburg R1, Mrs. Gene (Ruby) Burbrink, and Mrs. Charles (Ruthanna) Kaler, both of Columbus; four brothers, Scott Helt, Chris Helt and Chester Helt, all of Columbus, and Jacob Helt, of Azalia; a sister, Mrs. Marietta Thompson, of Columbus; and four grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by a brother, William Helt.
    Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday from the Reed and Jewell Funeral Home at Columbus with the Rev. Ronald Lucas, pastor of Rock Creek Methodist Church, officiating. Burial in Garland Brook Cemetery. Find A Grave Link

Chris Helt, Sr. dies Wednesday

    Chris Helt Sr., 89, of 1442 Franklin, Columbus, died at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday at Bartholomew County Hospital emergency room where he had been taken by Medic I Ambulance. A retired farmer, he had been seriously ill two months.
    Funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Dallas Collier at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Hathaway-Myers Funeral Chapel where persons called from 4 to 9 p.m. on Friday and 8:30 a.m. until time of service on Saturday. Burial was in Garland Brook Cemetery.
    He was born at Elizabethown January 12, 1892, the son of Charles F. and Nellie Denison Helt. He first married Marcha Eddleman who died Nov. 25, 1955. He then married Rachel Eddleman Dec. 6, 1958 and she survives. He was an Army veteran of World War I and a member of Rockcreek United Methodist Church and Modern Woodmen Lodge.
    Other survivors include a son, Chris Helt, Jr., of Scipio; three daughters, Glorianna Wells of 622 Smith, Columbus; Florine Unrue of Scipio and Aurelia Jones of Indianapolis; two brothers, Jacob Helt of Azalia and Scott Helt of Crothersville; a sister, Marietta Thompson of 1910 Keller, Columbus, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
