Sessional Record Book
Oak Grove Presbyterian Church
Jennings County, Indiana

Transcribed April 2021 by Sheila Kell
A difficult book to transcribe, the early pages have little spacing or punctuation, name spellings are very creative. It is a small book and is transcribed in the order written. Very few missing pages but obviously not all that was going on was noted in the book. The person writing these minutes used the ampersand a symbol (&) representing the word "and" a lot! Spelling is all over the place and date formats include some I have never seen before.

History
Of
The Organization
Of
The Oak Grove Church
At the commencement of these meetings, there was no church organization in the neighborhood & there had been very little preaching for many years. During the first four services, there were perhaps not more than half a dozen professors of religion present & it was not certainly known that there were any inquiring persons in the house. But at the close of preaching, at the fourth service, on an invitation for all who desired to be remembered in prayer, to manifest it publicly, there were twenty two who rose up, & by action said "Pray for us"!
The work began among the scholars attending the day School taught by Thomas May a most excellent young brother, who felt a deep religious interest in his pupils, & whose labors during the meetings were very valuable. The most of the pupils who were received into the church were from 16 to 22 years of age only one or two being as young as 14 - soon the work spread to the parents & relatives, the friends & neighbors, until scarcely a family, within a region of nearly 4 miles square, remained unawakened.
The meetings were entirely free from excitement or extravagance of any kind; while the preaching was of a plain, pointed & solemn character, calculated convince the sinner of his dreadful guilt & danger & to lead him to flee at once to Jesus the only Saviour.
It was a very favorable circumstance for the success of the meeting that the people were not gospel-hardened, & had no personal or social difficulties among themselves, & were not divided up into parties either politically or religiously.
There were 84 hopeful conversions, 78 of whom were received into the Scipio church; 70 were baptized during the meeting. There were among the converts 11 grand-parents, 33 parents, 35 females & 43 males.
Before the close of this remarkable work of Grace, the members were making arrangement to erect a house of worship.
To God be all the glory.
On the 8th of April 1869 the Presbytery of Madison met at Versailles; & a petition was sent up to this meeting of the Presbytery from the recent converts (with the exception of brother James George, who departed this life on Tuesday the 30th of March in connection with eleven others from the Scipio church, viz Charles W Wilkins, Mrs Eliza Jane Wilkins, Hannah Wilkins, James W. Leferra, Mrs. Mary Ann Waldorf, Mrs. Julia A George, Mrs Elizabeth Brown, Mrs Almra Brown, Frank P. Little, & Mrs Joanna Wilder, to be organized into a separate church.
Presbytery appointed a Committee consisting of Rev. David W. Moffat, Rev. C. K. Thompson; Elders Wm Jelf & Joel Amich to carry out the wishes of these petitioners.
The following Resolutions were adopted unanimously:
1st Whereas the Madison Presbytery was consulted as to the Constitutionality & Expediency of electing persons to serve as Ruling Elders in the session of this church for a limited & definite period; & whereas the Presbytery, _____ it postponed its definite answer until its next Stated meeting yet interposed no obstacle to the Oak Grove church electing Ruling Elders in the way proposed & further, in an informal manner, encouraged them to do so under the circumstance in which this new church is placed;
Therefore Resolved that we elect three Ruling Elders to serve in the Session, respectively for 5 years, 4 years & 3 years. And at the end of 3 years & thence forward annually one Elder be elected to seve in the session for 5 years, & that these continue in office until their successors be installed. The election was by the holding up of the hand; but it was ordered that hereafter all elections be by ballot.
Brother John G Wilkins was chosen Ruling Elder until April 19th 1874; Brother Stilly Brown until 1872 Resolved,
2nd - That inasmuch as Deacons must adopt the Confession of Faith & many of us are not very familiar with that document yet, therefore we will dispense for the present with the Office of Deacon, & elect instead, 3 Collectors to serve the church for 5 years, 4 years, & 3 years respectively, & that at the end of 3 years & thenceforward annually 1 Collector be elected to serve for 5 years, & that they remain in office until their successors are elected.
Bro John Wilkins was elected for 5 years; Bro Benjamin Sutton for 4 years; & Bro Simon Wimple for three years.
An election was also held for Trustees, which resulted in the choice of Bro Charles Wilkins, Bro Walter Brooks & Bro David Hughs for a term of 5 years.
The Ruling Elders elect, were then asked if they accepted the office to which they were chosen & having answered in the affirmative, & having responded to the prescribed constitutional questions they were ordained by prayer & the imposition of hands.

April 1925
Services were resumed at the Oak Grove Church on Sunday afternoon early in 1924 by arrangement of Fev W. W. Logan of the Home Mission Committee. The work was added to the North Vernon and Vernon pastoral field with Rev. L. V. Rule in charge. All summer the Services were continued. Elder Jordan of the Vernon Church worked faithfully with the pastor to Establish a Sabbath School at Oak Grove, and in due time it became a reality. Ralph Crisp of the Scipio Church was Elected Superintendant and has conducted the School in an admirable way. In the fall of 1924 Rev. W. W. Logan of the Home Mission COmmittee held a revival meeting, which resulted in several additions to the Church and a general spiritual awakening in the Community. The Sunday School continued steadily all winter long for the first time in the remembrance of the people: and in the Spring reopened with new life. The 56th Anniversary of the Church organization was fittingly observed and commemorated April 19, 1924. We are beginning the new year with the hope of better organization and restoration of this old church to a place of influence in the community where no other church is near.

The Oak Grove S.S. and Church services continued with marked interest to the Month of July, 1925, when a notable celebration was held. It was an all-day basket meeting, S.S. and preaching service in the forenoon. Sup'l Ralph Crisp, preaching by Rev. W. L. Robb and Rev L. V. Rule. The Scipio Church joined with us. Rev. W. W. Logan conducted the Vernon Morning services and joined us at the noon hour. The Oak Grove people showed old-time hospitality and fellowship. Three hundred people gathered for dinner and spread the tables under the trees. It was a sonderful occasion. After dinner the Township S.S. Convention of all churches was held by Superintendent Green of the County S.S. work. Rev. Logan and others addressed the audience and all the schools sang on the program. Pictures of the day were taken and Everybody departed to their homes rejoicing in the spirit of love and unity.
            L. V. Rule S. S.
Owing to many interuptions by attendance on other meetings and S.S. Conventions, the Oak Grove S.S. and services lost ground in the fall of 1925. A revival meeting was planned and announced on two occasions but providential circumstances prevented the same. This was all a severe handicap, of course: and by December the work looked very unfavorable. Our S.S. Supt. Mr. Ralph Crisp, could not be with us any more regularly; and on Sunday before Christman we had the Hanover Gospel Team visit the Church and give a program. In spite of wretched weather the people came out to hear them and it was a day of joy and gladness. Lunch was served to the Team and the hour of fellowship was most happy.
Again on the second Sunday of Jan. 1926, the Gospel Team Singers came and gave another program even finer than before. The day was worse than ever but the people turned out. Lunch and the social hour were a means of grace and we all went home with thankful hears. New resolution came to the people and a monthly social for all the congregation was begun early in Jan. at the home of Bro. Raymond Kurtz. The pastor and his wife came: and we found more than fifty present.
On the last Sunday in January 1926, Mr. Leonard Gillespie, of Hanover College, a cultured teacher of many years who resenbles in his life and work the Thomas May, founder of the Original Oak Grove religious Movement in 1869, came with the pastor and preached for us. Again the people braved wretched winter weather. The Vernon young people sang for us; and a Conference of the Church workers followed the service to plan for the future. We now believe the hand of God is leading us to a new and enduring work at this dear old CHurch. Sacramental Service was announced for the Second Sunday in February.
            L. V. Rule, S.S.  Jan. 31-1926

The second Sunday in March, 1926, Rev. E. W. Elliott visited the CHurch and preached to a good audience. He showed the necessity of the Oak Grove Congregation rallying to the maintenance of the services spiritually and financially, and upon calling for a standing expression of determination to do this the people were a unit. They proved their sincerity by making a canvass of their resources and membership and by coming out on succeeding Sundays and starting the Sunday School and preaching services of April with most encouragin spirit and attendance.
The Second Sunday in April Mr. Ralph Crisp and Mr. Chas. Stigdon were chosen by the congregation to appear before the Home Mission Committee at the Spring meeting of Presbytery at the Mt. Tabor Church and make report of the past years work and receive instructions for the ensuing year. At the same meeting of the Congregation a full report of the past years work and finance was prepared and given to our representatives to be presented to the Home Mission Committee. This report was by the Ch. Treasurer, Miss Grace Ritz
        April 11, 1926   L. V. Rule S.S.

Approved Mt. Tabor, Apr. 21, 26    Roy V. Chapin, Mod.

Beginning in April, 1926, the Oak Grove people arranged to send for the pastor, Rev. L. V. Rule, to Vernon twice each month on preaching days at Oak Grove so he could take dinner and visit in each family before afternoon service. This plan was carried out all summer and fall with much satisfaction and is still continued at the present writing.

On July 18th, 1926, the annual all day S.S. Convention and Home Coming was held at Oak Grove Church with 225 at dinner and 300 in the afternoon audience. The morning service was a very beautiful memorial service, with the Story of the founding of the Church by Rev. Thomas May, read by Mrs. B. M. Hall of Scipio Church, Former members of the Old Church present gave touching testimonies of its holy influence in their lives. In the afternoon Rev. D. Logan of the Home Mission Committee gave the chief address. Another beautiful feature of the day was the Girl Scout Troop of its Church organized by Miss Blanch Stigdon and the pastor, assisted by other leaders in the congregation. These girls took part in the program-20 of them and have been a marked influence for good with the young people ever since, as a goodly number of them came into the church on profession of faith in the October Revival.

A most helpful monthly event of the congregation the past year or more has been the Community social held at the homes of the people regularly and in rotation. It has been attended by from 50 to 86 people, with refreshments served and a happy time of old and young in social recreation and fellowship and song. This has also been a means of the Pastor meeting the people together from time to time.

Special song programs have been given during the season by visiting singers from Hanover College, Vernon and North Vernon Churches, which were well attended and greatly enjoyed. It is now planned for the Oak Grove Young People to give special service programs themselves on occasion as a participation in the public worship.

The October Revival, 1926, was begun Tuesday night, the 12th, by a visiting Evangelist, Rev. C. O. Dorn, of Oswego, S.C. a young ordained Methodist Minister attending the Louisville Presbyterian Seminary. He was enployed by the pastor and Home Mission Committee, and was assisted the first week by Elder C. W. Rule of Goshen, Ky., the pastor's brother, an experienced personal worker. The services were attended with increasing interest. Rev. Mr. Dorn was called home at the Tuesday of the first week by the serious illness of his father, and the pastor, Rev. L. V. Rule, conducted the meetings to the close of the second week.
Monday night, Oct. 18th, the last service Mr. Dorn was with us, Lenuel Foist and Glenn Kehrt were received on profession and baptized by the pastor the following night.
Tuesday night, Oct. 19th, Helen Eveleth and Mary Eveleth were received on profession and baptized.
Wednesday night, Oct. 20th, May Shinolt, Gertrude and Lillian Harvey and Gladys Kehrt were received on profession and the four were baptized Thurday night Oct. 21st.
On Friday night, Oct. 22nd the pastor held a special service for these young people, with very satisfactory results.
The closing sacramental service of the revival meeting was deferred until Sunday afternoon, Oct. 31st, when the pastor and his brother, Elder C. W. Rule, conducted the exercises. It was a very happy and impressive occasion. Four other young people responded to the invitation - Laura Marie Kehrt, Deloras Aletha Roberts, Ruth Olive Jolly, Doris Faye Roberts. Baptism was administered to all but the second one named, who had been baptized in childhood.
The session of the Vernon Church has assisted the pastor, Rev. L. V. Rule, in all cases and on all occassions necessary, where the absence of Elders at Oak Grove made this imperative.
The Oak Grove people contributed to the expense of the Revival Meeting the sum of $54.52.
Oct. 31, 1926        L. V. Rule, S.S.

The Oak Grove Church was represented in the Pension Campaign of 1927 by Raymond Kehrt and Charles Stigdon who attended the local conferences. The congregation contributed $75 to this fund by personal and individual subscription.

After a duly called and announced congregational meeting of the members of Oak Grove Church the membership of Oak Grove Church, the membership on Sunday, April 17, 1927, accepted the nomination of Raymond Kehrt as Elder and by a unanimous vote elected him to that office. The meeting was moderated by the pastor. Raymond Kehrt was duly ordained and installed as Elder. L. V. Rule    S.S. and Moderator

The above report is more than three times what it was ten years ago: and we believe the services and Sunday school, which continue the whole winter through when the roads permit, are better attended and as spiritually fruitful at least, han for many years past. The Oak Grove Church is now the social center of a large community of people and maintains its own services witht he single exception that the Home Mission Committee pays the pastor's outo hire to the monthly community meeting. The congregation take care of the pastors transportation by auto twice each month, which otherwise would cost $60 per year. In this way he goes from fome to home each Sabbath service day: and at the community meeting the attendance ranges from 50 to 80 in all weather. The women of the congregation are active in all the efforts to provide the congregational expenses.
The average attendance of the S.S. and Sabbath services ranges from 30 to 40 in all weather, and at special services much larger. The special Sundays of the year are observed and the Home Coming in July.
Election of Trustees
At a Congregational meeting duly called and announced during the past year, the following men of the congregation were elected Trustees of Oak Grove Church by the unamimous vote of the people. These names were certified to and recorded in the Jennings County Court Records by E.J. Welker, Clerk of the Court.

Pastoral Narrative
The failure of the bank at Scipio was a great shock and discouragement to our work at Oak Grove. The pastor's salary stopped for about a year and yet the services were continued, the people still transporting the pastor and the Home Mission Committee paying for the auto hire at community socials each month and the pastoral visitations. These house to house calls were made at stated times with marked increase of interest. In this way perhaps 45 or 50 families were touched by the itinerant parish ministry. It gave the pastor first hand acquaintance with the people.
In the early spring of 1929 Mr. Robert E. Glenn, and Irish-born student of Princeton Theological Seminary, came into the bounds of the North Vernon Church with his wife, who was a cultured and consecrated musician. Mr. Glenn came under the care of our church and Presbytery as a candidate for the ministry in April 1929, and was assigned to asssist in the work at Oak Grove. He began as a stated supply there in May, 1929, and has continued regularly to preach on Sunday night twice each month. The attendance at these services has been fairly encouraging and the congregation, through the treasurer Miss Grace Ritz, resumed payment of the pastor's salary with the present year.
During the entire summer of 1928, with the help of leadership from the Vernon and North Vernon Churches, the night services at Oak Grove were tried out and established in place of the Sunday afternoon services. The pastor prepared these programs for the night services: and these young people's meetings established the evening service as a permanent meeting time. Mr. B. E. Mc? of North Vernon young peoples work was perhaps most active in sustaining the night services in 1928, and from the Vernon Church Elder C.C. Jordan and his son George were equally active in behalf of Oak Grove.
The Oak Grove people purchased a new piano and the women of the congregation were exceedingly faithful in making what they could to sustain the services and the pastor. Mr. Glenn took hold of the work after the bank failure had ceased to handicap and discourage the people: and the good results of his regular preaching were evident. The church thus regained its first footing as a pastoral Station. And now in the month of October, 1929, we are entering on a series of sacramental revival service with the assistance of the Rev. Roy Brumbaugh, of the Brownstown Presbyterian Church. It is just three years since such a meeting was held at Oak Grove: and we are hoping and praying for a gracious visitation from God.

At the afternoon service held by the pastor, Rev. L.V. Rule, Sunday, Feby 3, 1929 Paul F. Kleber and Randolph Foist were received into the fellowship of Oak Grove Church on Confession of faith.
            L. V. Rule - Moderator

The simultaneous Revival Meetings arranged to be conducted by the pastor and the Rev. Roy E. Brumbaugh of Brownstown Church, beginning Sunday night, Oct. 20, 1929, at Oak Grove and Vernon churches opened favorably enough in the first attendance and interest: but the heavy fall rains continued throughout the week until the roads became practically impassable and the meeting at Oak Grove had to be suspended.
Mr. Brumbaugh offered to return in the month of May, 1930, providence permitting, and continue the meeting. Nut this did not meet the wish of the people; and Mr. Robt E. Glenn, the ministerial student who had conducted the Sunday night services at Oak Grove throughout the summer and fall of 1929 urged upon them the opening of a revival meeting in December which he himself wished to conduct alone. This met with the approval of all concerned and Mr. Glenn by living and visiting among the people and doing a lot of personal work succeeded in arousing such an interest as had not existed in many years. In fact it was one of the remarkable visitations of God in the history of Oak Grove CHurch, resembling in some ways the Great Revival when the church was first organized. The people showed their appreciation of Mr. Glenn's faithful work by contributing liberally of their means and sustence to his pastoral support and by driving him faithfully to and from the services, sometimes as far as 20 and 40 miles. This is mentioned to show the loyalty of the people to their pastors. Mr. Glenn resigned from the field the third week of January, 1930 and accepted a business position in Indianapolis. The regular pastor, Rev. L.V. Rule, then resumed the afternoon services on Sunday until Dr. W. W. Logan could come and plan for a pulpit supply in place of Mr. Glenn. He was expected on the 3rd Sunday afternoon of Feby 1930 to cunduct sacramental service.

Election and Ordination of Elders
By due announcement previously of a congregational meeting to elect additional Elders, this meeting was set for Sunday afternoon, Jan. 26. The pastor came with Judge Ralph Carney, Dr. C. N. Benson and Wm. Nauer, Elders of the Vernon Church, which has had the watch-over of Oak Grove until it is on its own basis of organization.
The members whose names are herein enrolled were received as confession of faith and by letter or statement. Baptism was administered by the pastor to 13 souls. Raymond Kehrt already an elder at Oak Grove participated in this meeting.
The pastor then called the congregational meeting to order and nominations for the eldership were made as follows.
Chas. Stigdon Wm Kehrt
Ed Foist Elmer Dean
Ben Eveleth Edward Dean
There being no further nominations the congregation voted unanimously for these men. The pastor then proceeded to give full instructions on the office and duty of the Eldership preporatory to the ordination service, which immediately followed and which was participated in by the Vernon Elders and Raymond Kehrt in the presence of the congregation. The six men chosen accepted their office in the House of God. The entire service seemed revilant and impressive to an unusual degree. Meeting adjourned with prayer.
            L. V. Rule, Moderator

Mrs. Sam Foist was received into the Oak Grove Church by Letter from the Hayden, Ind. M. E. Church the 3rd Sunday in February, 1930 by Dr. W. W. Logan, who preached and held sacrament in the absence of the pastor, Rev. L. V. Rule in a meeting at Crothersville.
            L. V. Rule, Moderator

With the resignation and departure of the student supply, Mr. R. E. Glenn, in Jan. 1930, the regular pastor, Rev. L. V. Rule resumed charge of the Oak Grove services. By unanimous consent of the session and congregation it was decided to have the semi monthly services on Saturday nights instead of Sunday afternoons as heretofore. One of these services would come on the evening of the monthly community social the first Saturday night in each month. The attendance at these meeting seemed to justify the change because at the first Saturday srvice in March, 45 people were present. And at the monthly social service and meeting the first Saturday night in April 65 were present. Mr. Elmer Dean is at this time Supt. of the Oak Grove S.S. and represented the Church, with Elder Foist, at the Educational Conference in Seymour and the S.S. Conference in North Vernon ch. in the spring of 1930. Elder Chas. Stigdon and Wm Khert appeared before the Home Mission Committee at the North Vernon Church in April and made a full report of the condition of the Church Spiritually and financially. The women of the Congregation are active in doing what they can for the Church in the way of help financially. They held a market in North Vernon in April, and the needed improvements are the Church building are planned for by the trustees. The unity and fellowship of the congreation is gratifying to witness, and in spite of exceedingly slender money resouces few churches in the Presbytery have showed larger gains in membership and in the increase and strength of this old church in the hearts of the people.

Mrs. Fannie Etter was received into the fellowship of the Oak Grove Church on a restatement of her Christian faith. She had for many years been a member of the Christian CHurch elsewhere, but now living in the vicinity of Oak Grove and desiring to be enrolled, the session unanimously voted to receive her at their July meeting 1930.
            Lucien V. Rule, Moderator

For the open season of 1930 the services have been conducted twice a month by officers and leaders of the Vernon and North Vernon CHurches and by a regular ministerial Supply sent and paid for by Rev. W. W. Logan, D.D> of the National Mission Committee. Among the meetings of unusual interest and attendance were: address on the Holy Land by Mrs. Gail Meloy of North Vernon Church.

In the summer and fall of 1930 it became necessary for the Committee on National Missions through W Logan to secure a Student supply for Oak Grove twice a month at night. The services of Mr. Everett Moye of Louisville Seminary were secured and he gave careful attention to the work, although not able to be in the field long enough to do the necessary pastoral visitation he desired, the S.S. and Ch. services, however showed new interest and good results. The monthly social was well attended and the congregation did their part with splendid loyal spirit, this social was commended to all country churches.

On the first Saturday night in Feb. Mrs. Lemuel Foist came before the session on Confession of faith, was recived and baptized by the pastor.    L. V. Rule, Moderator

Miss Grace Ritz and Elder Ben Eveleth represented the Church before the Committee on National Missions at North Vernon in March 1931, a full report of finances, membership, etc. was made and approved.

        Approved April 22, 1931
Frederick A Parker, Moderator of New Albany Presbyery

During Months, May, June, July, and August 1931 Mr. E. P. Moye of Louisville Seminary held regular services the second and fourth Sundays of each month. He would come from Louisville into the Oak Grove Community on Thursday afternoon before his preaching date and stay in the different home of the congregation open to him, spending his time between then and the Sabbath visiting with the people and to feel that he was rending some service to the people. The response of the people to his efforts were most gratifying.
The community meetings were well attended. They were held on the Second Saturday night of each month in order that Mr. Moye might ge present. At the July Community meeting Mr. Moye and Rev. Lucien Rule, who has oversight of the work, proposed to the members present that a meeting of about ten days be held around the first of August. The people appeared interested and after bringing the matter before the Sunday evening congregation it was decided to have a meeting July 30 - August 9, 1931.
Hot weather and treshing seemed to come at that time but as rains set in the meeting was well attended averaging between forty and fifty a service, one night going to seventy-five. At first it seemed that little would result as there was not a true Christian unity among the people but as the meeting progressed there was evidence of the real Spirit of God in the meetings. Rev. Lucian Rule and his brother Elder Clarence Rule of Goshen, Ky. assisted in the meeting, thus making it the success that it was. Mr. Moye conducted the meetings, led the singing and preached when these his were not able to be present. Singers from the No. Vernon Pres. and Hayden M. E. Church assisted. On Sunday August 9 Rev. Lucian Rule of Vernon and No. Vernon churches preached and administered the sacrament. Mrs. Bessie Jolly was received into membership by the session by statement, her letter to be obtained from the Scipio M. E. Church. There are others who were moved by the meeting and who are considering coming into the church. The meetings lifted the people closer to Christ and raised the spiritual level of the members, bringing them together more as a unit.   The Sunday School is progressing, so that the church is taking on a new life from its summer activities in every aspect of its work.
            E. P. Moye, Student Supply

The above narrative of a year's work by Rev. E. P. Moye of Columbus, Ga. who served the Oak Grove Church as stated supply during his last full year at Louisville Seminary is a valuable and precious record. His account is naturally modest and simple, but the work he did and the spiritual impression left upon the lives of the people has only been equalled by the Rev. Thomas May, founder of the Church more then 60 years ago.
Mr. Moye was chosen out of all the students at the Seminary by another student, Rev. Carl Winters, at out earnest request, as the most intelligent, tactful, unselfish and consecrated yound man available, who was not seeking largesse, bur would come to a quiet, secluded country neighborhood in the heart of Southern Indiana where an old fashioned, open-hearted Christian people awaited an undershepherd. After a little while these people received the young man of God into their homes and confidence, and they learned to love him with a peculiar devotion. He was so thoughtful and unselfish that a saintliness mellowed and humanized his culture and contact. He participated in all their socials and social pleasures with humor and friendliness: but he had such a vision of the Kingdom of God among them that his example was irresistable and prevading. Far from being a commercial type of preacher whose objective was more members and vain show, he set himself to win the hearts and lives of those among who he lived and labored to a newer neighborliness a happier social and family life, a more beautiful experience of God with us and within us. And he left and undying memory of the Master when he closed his work with this people on April 1st, 1932. They gave him a touching evidence of their love by the presentation of a beautiful Bible from all the congregation of the home of Elder Raymond Kehrt on Sunday, when a bountiful dinner was served by the gathered people. Thus closes a real year of God in the history of Oak Grove church - and this record, not set down in cold, informal, impersonel style, but warm and human with Christian fellowship and gratitude is some recompense for our loss till the Lamb's Book of Life and Gods Book of Rememberence are opened on high.

Approved at Salem, April 20, 32, John L. Prentice, Mod.

On Saturday night, April 9, 1932, at the Oak Grove Ch. Rev. L. V. Rule, moderator of the session, called the officers together and presented the request of Mrs. Nancy Greathouse of the Oak Grove neighborhood to be received into the fellowship of the Church. Mrs. Greathouse has long been an invalid and unable to attend public worship. But she was converted as a girl of 17 at a Methodist Camp meeting in Randolph Co. Mo. where she was visiting with her father. She has ever since been a follower of her Lord and Saviour. Her wish to become a member of Oak Grove is because her husband and children worshipped there, and her spiritual identity is naturally there also. The session welcomed her request and the congregation expressed satisfaction and sympathy in having her enrolled among us. Prayer was offered for her peace and comfort in her illness and this record is made of her case upon our minutes. L. V. Rule, Moderator

June, 1932
Record is here made of the fact that in the month of May we requested the Rev. Carl Winters to find us another suitable young man at the Louisville Seminary who would fill the place of Mr. Moye made vacant at Oak Grove. Mr. Winters at once recommended Mr. Kenneth A. Neuber of Illinois, who visited the Oak Grove field and preached for the people the 4th Sabbath in May. There was a renewed attendence at S.S. and the night service. Mr. Neuber was assigned to this field in connection with Crothersville, which he visited the 5th Sunday in May with the sanction of the Com. on National Missions. Final plans were made for Mr. Neuber to preach at Crothersville the morning of each 2nd and 4th Sabbath during the summer and at Oak Grove on the rights of those Sabbaths. This plan seems to promise the same good results as did the coming of Mr. Moye to these people, and record is hereby made of the fact.
            L. V. Rule, Moderator Oak Grove Session

                September, 1932
In the month of June, 1932, Kenneth Arthur Neuber, a ministerial student from the Presbyterian Seminary at Louisville, Kentucky, attempted to pick the work where Mr. Moye had left it at the close of his seminary course.
Worship services continued every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month in the beloved, white church on the hill. The good people of Oak Grove responded quite well at these evening services, both with their presence and their cooperative singing and attention.
During the latter part of the summer it was decided that another evangelistic awakening was needed.
On September the 8th the revival began with Mr. Neuber preaching. He was assisted so cordially and capably by Rev. Lucian Rule, who preached some powerful messages. The meetings continued through September 16th, and at the close 3 souls stood at the altar to give their lives to the Master.
Mrs. Alma Hall and her son George came on confession of faith and asked salvation through Jesus forgiving their sins. They asked to be baptized through emersion, and this service was duly arranged for and carried out on Sept. 10th at the rock quarry pit near the Ritz home. Mr. Rule baptized the new converts.
Mrs. Charles Long came by letter into Oak Grove Church. At the time of this writing we are awaiting the arrival of her letter from her former church.
We feel that the meetings were successful because the Christian people were not only stirred spiritually, but we remember that Christ said that one lost sheep is more valuable then 90 and 9 good ones, and we are so happy that these souls were saved.
            Kenneth Neuber, Student Supply

                August, 1933
Since the dought made crops so late, it seemed that the session found it hard to select an appropriate time for our annual revival. Some thought that we should dispense with the weeks special services.
But God's will proved to be in favor of a series of services during the last week of August, and everyone during the last week of August, and everyone felt gratified, because 7 young people gave their hearts to Christ.
On the first night Mary Catherine Downs came to take the Master. She had been thinking, and was waiting for an opportunity to take Him publicly.
The following night her two brothers came, Wilbur and Melvin Downs. The next night found Emma Eddings accepting Christ's mercy.
Then on the last night Charles and Delbert Miller and Edith Taylor came forward to join the ranks of the repentent.
God was gracious and His Spirit moved hearts to yield to the influence of many prayers. God was able to use Mr. Charles Rule and the acting pastor, Kenneth Neuber, to bring the Gospel into many homes. We visited about 30 homes.
On the last night, Rev. Lucien Rule came out to join us and to baptize all the converts. The happy season of services closed with a touching Communion service.
There were others who were helped by the meeting, who didn't take the Master. Some of them were on the verge of coming, but admitted that they didn't for reasons they couldn't explain.
Perhaps God will be able to bring them by next year.
            Kenneth Neuber
              Student Supply

            June 1935
This month marks the close of the physical work done through the student supply, Kenneth Neuber, but we are trusting that God will continue the work begun, and will be able to use Mr. McDonald even to a greater extent as he comes to succeed Neuber.
In 1934 we had a nice bulletin board donated to the Sunday School by Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Hall, & the interest in the Sunday School increased immediately.
Late in the summer the church sponsored a revival with Mr. Neuber doing the preaching. It was a busy season and the attendance did not reach a high level until the the short week was about over.
It was during this year that the pastor and his wife brought their letter from Litchfield, Ill, and moved it to Oak Grove, that he might be licensed in New Albany Presbytery.
It was also during this year that a letter of dismission was given to Miss Goldie Lane to Indianapolis, Ind.
In 1935 we set a mark of 100 for the Sunday School mark at Easter. The attendance reached the 99 mark on that date. In 1934 the Easter mark was set for 75 and we had 76 present.
At Easter in 1935 as well as 1934 we had Good Friday services, Sunrise service, Morning worship and in 34 evening worship too. In 35 we had a communion service in the afternoon with Dr. Frank Coldwell of Louisville Seminary and Rev. Meml Kenedy of North Vernon taking charge.
At that time the following members were received into the church:
Mr. & Mrs. Gerald Marshall (by letter from Tea Creek Baptist church)
Mr. William Carson (by letter from North Vernon).
Mr. Harley Pool (by promise of letter from Scipio)
Mr. Junior Downs on confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
The church is to have a new roof soon. The people became quite interested last fall and raised the money for the roof, but to date, because of the incessant rains, we have been unable to put the roof on.
My wife and I leave Oak Grove with a deep feeling of love for the people, and a prayer for the Work of Jesus Christ to grow in their hearts and lives.
