MT. ZION METHODIST CHURCH & CEMETERY
MARION TOWNSHIP, JENNINGS COUNTY INDIANA

I feel the need to explain this section of the Jennings County, web site. I was driving around rural Jennings County with a map checking out all the Cemeteries listed. I pulled in at the Mt. Zion Methodist Church and was struck with how lovely it was. I also noticed a handwritten sign in the Church window. It was getting late and I took some pictures, then headed home. When I was downloading the pictures I again read the sign in the window and was struck by how wonderful it was that these people were taking care of this Church and Cemetery so I contacted the Mr. Smith listed on the sign. He gave me the number of Marie (Johnson) Bridges who at 93 years young has been keeping records of the Cemetery and she graciously gave me her documents to copy for this web site. I only wish some of our other ancestors graves had the care these do. I dedicate this page to the those who have kept this lovely old church and cemetery and to the memory of their families. Notes I have entered are in this color purple.

Mt. Zion Methodist Church, April, 2008

The sign in the Window at Mt. Zion Methodist Church, 2008

Miss Helen Lewis, whose mother was a Deputy, spent many hours copying the inscription on each stone. Some were very difficult to read. There may be mistakes, but that is understandable. I do not know the date she did this work, but am attempting to complete the task in the year 1999. Some of the graves have only field stones and no one knows who was buried in that space.

In the 1940's, a fund was established to provide maintenance for the cemetery. Miss Almira Gruber, daughter of John and Martha (Deputy) Gruber, worked tirelessly for this project. Many gave their support by donating labor and money. The grounds are now beautifully cared for and by continuing our efforts, they will remain so. My heartfelt thanks to all who have helped and are continuing to contribute.
Marie (Johnson) Bridges

DEPUTY ANCESTRY

Solomon Deputy married Sally Deputy, his second cousin, about the year 1803. They were married in Delaware-near Dover and immediately moved to Virginia, near Parkersburg. They and their household goods were transferred over the Alleghany Mountains to Virginia in a two-wheeled cart, drawn by an old mare named "Shin" (the writer has in her possession a sugar box, which was given the bride by her mother in law and which came in the cart.)
They moved to Jennings County, Indiana, in 1810. Solomon died in 1816. Leaving his wife with six small children-the youngest 6 months old-in the wilderness among Indiana, bears, wolves, etc. Sally was a brave, industrious, good woman, and raised all her children and kept her farm. She in her old age lived with her daughter, Esther (the writers mother) and died there nearly four years after her daughter's death. Her father's name was John. She was about 74 years of age when she died.
When Solomon died, the country being new, there were no saw mills, or nails. For his coffin, his neighbors sawed (with a cross cut saw) a log into the proper length, then lengthwise and with their "broad axes" hewed out a cavity large enough to contain the body, and after placing the body in, they fastened the two parts together with wooden pins, driven in holes bored by an auger. The hearse was a sled, drawn by one horse. Aquilla Robertson, my father, then a boy-riding the horse to the grave, as the roads were rough and perhaps stumpy.

Solomon and Sally Deputy's Children, viz:

Sylvester, born September 21, 1805 in Virginia
William,  born September 5, 1807 in Virginia
Esther,  born August 21, 1809 in Virginia
Joshua,  born June 4, 1811 in Jennings County, Indiana
Polly,  born September 24, 1813
Solomon, December 8, 1815
