Dr. Arlie Ray Barnes


    Arlie Ray Barnes was born on April 24, 1892, at Paris Crossing, Indiana, the son of James Henry and Nancy (Wolf) Barnes. He attended school in Marion Township but because Marion Township did not offer high school, he attended and was graduated from Hayden High School in 1909.
    He enrolled at Indiana University to obtain a degree in education and became a teacher at the Hayden school and in a short time was appointed principal there. He returned to Indiana University to study medicine where he graduated with a medical degree in 1919. He served in the United States Army in 1918. He went to the Mayo Foundation in 1920. He has held various offices in medical circles. He is author of "Electrocardiograph Patterns of Diagnostic Significance". In 1947, he was elected President of the American Heart Association and that same year, became Chairman of the Board of the Mayo Clinic. He would hold that top position until 1953.
    During his illustrious medical career, Dr. Barnes served as president on several medical organizations including the Central Society for Clinical Research, Central Interurban Clinical Club, and the Inter-American Congress of Cardiology. He became a board member of the Equitable Life Insurance Company in 1952 where he remained until 1965.
    Dr. Barnes retired from the Mayo Clinic in 1957. He had married Blanche Story, of Vernon, daughter of Smith W. Story and Selina (Carlilse) Story and they had one son, David. Dr. Barnes passed away on March 24, 1970, while on vacation in Panama City, Florida and was buried at the Vernon Cemetery.
