Esther E. Thomas, 98, a former Portland resident, died Tuesday at South Lyon Gardens Nursing Home in South Lyon, Mich. Born on Aug. 17, 1907, in Berne, to Jacob and Elizabeth (Nussbaum) Felber, she married Marlowe E. Thomas on March 9, 1929. He died on March 15, 1985.
She had worked at Display Craft in Portland for several years and had attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Portland.
Survivors include a daughter, Janet VanDenBerg, Brighton, Mich.; a sister, Elma Felber, Decatur; half-sister, Florine Coffel, Fort Wayne; five grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.
Services are Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Portland Chapel of the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home with Pastor Darrell Borders officiating. Burial will be in Little Salamonia Cemetery, southeast of Portland. Visitation is Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Tuesday.
Memorials may be sent to the Little Salamonia perpetual care fund with envelopes available at the funeral home.
