James P. Bryant, son of Nathaniel and Susan Jane Maxey Bryant was born near Charleston, Ill Feb 16, 1859. He was a member of a family of 9; one sister, Mrs. Dora Green of Charleston, Ill survives. On July 3, 1878, he was united in marriage to Marietta Jane Robbins at Charleston. 8 children bless this union; six survive: Alfred of Yeddo; Nathan near Kingman; Charles near Marshfield; Martin of Wallace; Mrs. Stella Keller of Waynetown and Mrs. Ann Roth of Elkhart. A son, Melvin and a duaghter, Mrs. Artie Wooley have passed on. In 1883, they purchased a farm in Jackson Twp, Fountain County and for 50 years this was their home until Mrs. Bryant's death in 1933. He then made his home with his children. He was seriously ill one week and was taken to Culver Hospital, where he passed away, Sunday March 8, 1945 at the age of 86 years, one month and 22 days. Another pioneer, among the few remaining, has been called to his final rest. We sometimes wonder if this generation fully realizes the hardship, toil and trials of such pioneers as Mr. Bryant. To them we owe an everlasting debt of gratitude. This good husband, father, neighbor and true friend to all has answered the final summons, which none can escape, with the hope and promise of a more glorious life we can say: "Be still sad hearts and cease repining, for behind the clouds the sun is still shing." Pete as he was known to all, possessed a happy jovial disposition, which won and held many life long friendships. This good citizen will be sadly missed by the entire community. Left to mourn besides the children and sister are 11 grandchildren, 10 greats and many friends.
