PHILLIP M. BROWN

Source: Crawfordsville Journal, Tuesday, October 19, 1915

P.M. Brown, civil war veteran, aged 75, died this morning at ten forty-five, after an illness lasting since Friday evening. Mr. Brown was one of the well known members of the little group of vanishing heroes of the great war who lived hereabouts. He had lived in this vicinity all his life, going to the war at twenty and returning at its conclusion to his farming pursuits at Mellott. The aged veteran had been in declining health for a number of years, but his condition did not become dangerous until Friday. A complication of diseases caused his death. Born in New Jersey, Mr. Brown came to this county with his parents in his boyhood, the trip being made in a wagon. The family settled near Mellott, where Mr. Brown held a membership in the G.A.R. organization. When the call came, he enlisted at twenty in Co. D, 116th Indiana Volunteers, and served until the end of the war. He then returned to Mellott to pursue his work as a farmer. Five years ago he removed to this city. Three children, besides the widow, a second wife, who was Mrs. S.M. Randolph, survive. They are Mrs. George Ferguson of Mellott, and Turpin and Asa Brown of California. Funeral arrangements are not yet complete, but the services will probably be held Thursday.
