VEEDERSBURG, Ind. -- Services for Jewell D. Shirley, 50, of 1012 Meridian, who was found dead at his home Saturday night, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Parham Funeral Home in Veedersburg, with the Rev. Bill Keller officiating. Burial will be in Cold Springs Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Shirley was born Oct. 5, 1919, in Veedersburg, a son of Franklin and Bessie Woods Shirley. He married Inez Stucker, who survives. Also surviving are four brothers, Lloyd of Chicago, Ill., Harley of Hammond, Glenn of Louisville, Ky., and Lowell; and two sisters, Mrs. Edith Stonebreaker of Veedersburg and Mrs. Berle Templeton of Hillsboro. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. Mr. Shirley was a veteran of World War II, and saw service with the Army in the South Pacific.

A 50-year-old Veedersburg man was killed and his wife hospitalized after they were overcome by carbon monoxide fumes from a clogged flue in their home here Saturday night. Dead is Jewell B. Shirley, 1012 N. Meridian St. His wife, Inez, was listed in "fairly good" condition in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Danville, Ill., Monday. The couple was found about 10:20 p m. Saturday by Mrs. Shirley's grandsons, Don and Dennis Hughes. They said they found the lights on in the Shirley home and could see Mr. and Mrs. Shirley seemingly asleep in separate bedrooms. Unable to arouse them by beating on the windows, the Hughes broke into the house and found Shirley dead and his wife unconscious. Volunteer firemen administered oxygen to Mrs. Shirley, who was rushed to the Danville hospital and was first admitted to its intensive care ward. Fountain County Coroner Robert Shelby, who ruled Shirley's death accidental by carbon monoxide poisoning, said the man had been dead several hours before he was discovered. A World War II veteran, Mr. Shirley served in the U. S. Army in the South Pacific. He was employed as a hired hand on the farm of John Carrell of rural route Covington. He was born in Veedersburg. Surviving with the widow are four brothers, Lloyd of Chicago, Ill., Harley of Hammond, Glen of Louisville, Ky., and Lowell, address unknown, and two sisters, Mrs. Edith Stonebraker of Veedersburg and Mrs. Berle Templeton of Hillsboro.
