Popular Attica tavern owner, Loren Paul (Sandy) Sandefer Jr. died Monday (May 10, 1971) at the home of his mother, Mrs. Hazel Sandefer, 312 S. Stewart St., Danville, Ill., where he had resided the past five months. He had owned and operated Sandy’s Tavern here since 1950 when he moved to Attica from Danville, where he had been a machinist with the C & EI railroad. A graduate of Danville High School in 1940, he began working with the C & EI, joined the Navy during World War II, then returned to C & EI before moving to Attica. He was born Dec. 31, 1922, at Danville, the son of Loren Paul Sandefer Sr. and Hazel Juanita Helmick Sandefer. He married Nancy Whaley in June, 1964, who survives. She is a resident of 201 Avenue Two, Attica. Also surviving are a son, Loren Paul Sandefer III; three daughters, Sherry Jo Sandefer, and Loretta Ann Sandefer, all of Attica; Mrs. Jean Paris, Rt. 1, Veedersburg; his mother, Hazel Sandefer, Danville, three brothers, Robert I. Sandefer, Simi, Calif.; Albert R. Sandefer, Park Forest, Ill.; William R. Sandefer, Catlin, Ill.; four sisters, Mrs. Virginia Hill, Hammond; Mrs. Jane Lucas, East Chicago; Mrs. Charles Ellis, Danville; Mrs. Martha Hall Jr., Danville. He was preceded in death by his father. He was a member of the First Congregational Church the Veedersburg Masonic Lodge No. 490, Consistory and Shrine, Warren Post, and Attica VFW. His hobby was golfing. -– jlr
