WWII-KIA-SMITH, John C.

Mrs. Max Shoemaker of Mellott was notified Monday by the War Department that her brother, Pfc. John C. Smith, age 28 was Killed In Action in Italy , May 31.  Previously reported missing, Pfc. Smith went overseas with an infantry unit in May 1943 after four years service.

In a letter received from a brother, Pfc James G. Smith also in service with the infantry in Italy, Mrs. Shoemaker learned that Pfc. Smith was Killed at the Anzio beach head and that he was buried in an American cemetery nearby with the brother witnessing the rites.  

The letter also stated that Pfc. died enroute to a field hospital after suffering bullet wounds.

Note: Believe his middle name was Clem - Pvt 1st class Army
