Elmer served as a Second Lieutenant on a B-24H (#42-94969), 330th Bomber Squadron, 93rd Bomber Group, 8th Air Force, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Indiana prior to the war.

Elmer was "Killed In Action" in the collision of his B-24 with B-24J (#42-99949) during a bombing mission to Koblenz, Germany. They collided and crashed in Ingelmunster, Belgium. He was awarded the Air Medal and a Purple Heart.
